Thanks to Brezza and Fronx, Maruti Suzuki has moved ahead of Mahindra to become the biggest SUV maker in India.
Maruti Suzuki has been the largest selling car manufacturer in India since time immemorial. It is known for offering some of the most well-sorted cars to the Indian car buying lot. Now, the popular brand added another feather to its cap. It has become the biggest SUV maker in the Indian market, beating both Tata and Mahindra. Thanks to popular car models like Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara, and the new Jimny, Maruti Suzuki has outsold the competition to reach the top spot in July 2023. This is an interesting change in the landscape of the Indian automotive industry.

Maruti Suzuki Clocks 167% YoY Growth in SUV Sales
According to recent reports, Maruti Suzuki sold 42,620 SUVs in India in the month of July 2023. This represents 167% year-on-year growth. In comparison, Mahindra managed to sell only 36,124 units. Maruti’s strong numbers in July are due to the sustained demand for models like Brezza, Fronx, and Grand Vitara. The company has also benefitted from the Nexa channel attracting buyers from higher segments. The popular chain sells Jimny, Invicto, S-Cross, and XL6. The increase in demand has led to a cumulative SUV order book of over 110,000 units for Maruti Suzuki.
Maruti Suzuki sold around 135,246 SUVs in the April-July 2023 period. Whereas Mahindra & Mahindra sold 136,174 units. Going by the current trend, Maruti Suzuki is likely to considerably increase the lead by the end of August 2023. The company’s premium sales channel, Nexa has been doing really very well in terms of monthly sales. In the first four months of this fiscal year, Nexa outlets have sold approximately 184,200 units. In comparison, Hyundai Motor India sold 199,000 units.

Focus on Ramping Up Production
The company aims to move beyond the already impressive numbers. It is focusing on improving production capabilities in the SUV segment. Shashank Srivastava, Senior Executive Director, Maruti Suzuki has said that “the demand environment remains positive.” So far, the new SUV launches have benefitted the brand. It is expected to grow further in the upcoming festive season. The popular brand has already solidified its position in the Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh SUV segment.
