Specs
We expect the 5-door Mahindra Thar to carry the same engine options as the existing model. This means a choice between two engines – a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel and a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol. The turbo-diesel engine makes a peak power of 130 hp and a torque of 320 Nm, while the turbo-petrol engine offers 150 hp and 320 Nm. You can pair both engines with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox, which also has a low-range transfer case. Moreover, the vehicle has a special centre differential that locks in mechanically, allowing it to be set in a 4×4 arrangement. The ex-showroom prices range from Rs 10.54 lakh to Rs 16.78 lakh. The 5-door version will command a slight premium over these prices.

What We Think
We are excited to see this niche segment expand. People are taking off-roading adventures seriously. As a result, the demand for vehicles like the Mahindra Thar, Force Gurkha and Maruti Jimny is at an all-time high. Until now, the Thar dominated the segment since its inception. However, it was not practical in terms of cabin space. But with the 5-door version on the anvil, that issue will be resolved. It might still remain a 4-seater, but there will be plenty of space for the second row, as well as the luggage compartment. Let us wait and see how things pan out with the upcoming Thar.
