Siddhartha Lal, the Managing Director of Eicher Motors Limited (EML), recently revealed exciting news for motorcycle enthusiasts and electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts alike. He announced that Royal Enfield is set to launch its first electric bike in India in 2025. This revelation comes after earlier hints that the company had already started development work on EVs. It even came to light that a dedicated team for the project is being led by CTO Umesh Krishnappa.
“We are around two years out before the product (electric motorcycle) hits the market. We are riding our prototypes. But it will take us some time. We don’t want to give half-baked stuff in the market at all.” said Lal. He added, “Our idea is to be totally disruptive. So, it’s not about putting something in (and) hoping or taking some other competition head on or improving on them. It’s a totally different paradigm that we’re working towards in terms of EV. It takes time to put together something really fantastic.”

Investment and Infrastructure
Recognizing the potential of electric mobility, Eicher Motors has earmarked over Rs 1,000 crore in capex for the ongoing fiscal year. A significant portion of this investment will be directed towards developing EV products and setting up a robust sales network. This substantial commitment highlights the company’s dedication to providing consumers with high-quality electric bikes that meet their expectations.
To ensure the seamless production of electric bikes, Royal Enfield is in the process of setting up a dedicated assembly line. This facility will boast an annual production capacity of around 1.5 lakh units, hinting at the the ambitious plans for EV market. The assembly line will be incorporated into the existing manufacturing premises, with future plans to establish a new greenfield facility at Cheyyar, further enhancing production capabilities.

This team is deeply invested in understanding consumer requirements, making the product strategy a meticulous and elaborate process. By prioritizing consumer needs, Royal Enfield aims to deliver electric bikes that resonate with their audience.
“We are testing the mules, signing up with the supply partners, setting up some capacity, etc. But that’s only a vehicle and (there are) some other aggregates which we have to make for EV in terms of battery management system, motor control unit systems, et. All the partners have been designed. So, we are in full speed in terms of execution,” said Govindrajan.
