There are good chances Hyundai Exter would get 5-star safety ratings in the new Global NCAP test
Recently, the much-awaited Hyundai Exter was launched in the Indian market. It comes with best-in-segment technology and safety features. There are enough chances that the new micro SUV would get a 5-star safety rating in the new Global NCAP test. This will make it Hyundai’s first car in this segment to come with 5-Star NCAP Safety Ratings. It will also allow the car to go head-to-head with Tata Punch, which already comes with 5-star NCAP safety rating, albeit, awarded as per older standard.

Indian consumers are more aware of safety features than ever before. Naturally, car manufacturers have started using safety ratings as a USP. Hyundai believes that the car’s comprehensive range of multi-segment safety features will enable it to get a good rating in the Global NCAP and upcoming Bharat NCAP standards. A 5-Star NCAP Safety Rating will make the Hyundai Exter one of the safest cars in the Indian market. However, the NCAP results are yet to be officially announced.
Hyundai Exter SUV Safety Features
Safety features on the Hyundai Exter include 6 airbags as standard, electronic stability control (ESC), hill-start assist control (HAC), tyre pressure monitoring system, and vehicle stability management (VSM). Additionally, the Hyundai Exter sports a fortified structure that optimizes safety during an accident. The new SUV comes with two powertrain options – a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.2-litre bi-fuel (petrol + CNG). For transmission, it comes with a 5-speed manual and an AMT gearbox option. The Hyundai Exter SUV comes with a starting price of Rs 5.99 lakh. It competes with the likes of Tata Punch, Citroen C3, and Tiago NRG.
Global NCAP Safety Ratings
As per revised safety standards for Global NCAP ratings, ESC is the most important standalone safety feature. The Hyundai Exter offers this feature as standard across all variants. Additionally, the side-impact and pedestrian-protection tests are very important for Global NCAP Safety Ratings. So far, Hyundai cars have not received high scores in the Global NCAP tests. Even the Hyundai Creta comes with a 3-Star Global NCAP Safety Rating. In comparison, brands like Mahindra, Tata, Volkswagen, and Skoda have car models with 5-star or 4-star safety ratings in the Indian market. If Hyundai Exter scores 4-star or 5-star safety ratings in Global NCAP crash tests, Hyundai can implement similar features in other models which will be a good development for Indian consumers.

Bharat NCAP Safety Ratings
Hyundai also hopes to perform well in the upcoming Bharat NCAP by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH). The voluntary crash test rating platform is expected to launch on October 01, 2023. Since Bharat NCAP is based on the new Global NCAP safety test protocols (applicable from July 2022 to December 2025), the Hyundai Exter SUV is bound to get similar results. As per the draft notification, a car needs to perform well in pole-side impact tests for a 5-star Bharat NCAP Safety Rating. It should come with features like ESC and seatbelt reminders.
