Nitin Gadkari often makes huge promises and has been able to fulfil a lot of these in the last few years.
Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highway, has claimed that India will become the world’s largest carmaker by 2028. He is an ambitious minister and has fulfilled a lot of such tall promises in the last few years with regard to automobiles and road infrastructure. That is what makes him so likeable. His passion for the Indian automobile industry comes through in all his interviews where he talks about improving the road infrastructure, vehicle manufacturing, transitioning to alternative fuels, sustainability, EVs and other such topics. But his latest statement might be too difficult to come true.

Nitin Gadkari Says India Will Become Largest Carmaker
This statement came on the occasion of celebrating the fact that India overtook Japan recently to become the third-largest carmaker in the world behind China and the USA. Japan sold 4.28 million cars in 2022 while India sold 4.13 million by November itself. For reference, US and China sold 13.8 million and 26.8 million cars in 2022 respectively. That will give you an idea of why everyone thinks that the statement from the minister might just be too ambitious. However, one important statistic to back his claim could be the fact that the Indian automobile market grew by 24% (YOY).

In comparison, the US market de-grew by 8% while the Chinese market grew by just 2%. That unequivocally indicates the future of the industry in all three markets. Another key aspect mentioned in this video by Biturbo Media is that other related aspects are also needed to be taken care of like developing the infrastructure at a fast pace. We are already witnessing insane traffic jams in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. Hence, that must be taken into consideration as well.

What We Think
We truly appreciate the intent of the minister and he has a strong past record of delivering on his promises regardless of how ambitious they may have sounded in the beginning. But we must also not lose track of the reality and the challenges associated with such aspirations. In any case, the fact that someone in power is so passionate about our automobile industry is great for the sector and the nation’s economy. Let us hope that we are able to carry this momentum forward and see where our industry ends up in the next 5 years.
