Global NCAP testing has become rigorous and more stringent recently which makes us wonder if the already 5-star rated cars will be able to score well as per the new regulations.
The 2023 Tata Nexon facelift has been seen testing on multiple occasions now. The launch might just be around the corner. Nexon became an instant success in our market ever since its top-notch safety credentials were declared by Global NCAP. In fact, the high safety rating isn’t the only reason for the massive demand for the compact SUV. These includes things like bold styling, featured-filled features, good ride quality and adequately powerful engine options. Now, the upcoming facelift model is expected to carry all these attributes in addition to having some new-age tech and design language to woo the customers. But will it score 5 stars again?

The existing model scored a full 5 stars at the GNCAP in 2018. This made it the first 5-star rated car in India. However, the testing standards have become much more stringent in recent times. But Tata has not made any modifications to the platform of the Nexon. It still continues to be underpinned by the X1 platform from around 15 years ago on which the Indica was based. In fact, Tata Motors had to make some adjustments to the ABS last time to get move up fro 4-star to 5-star score in Adult Protection. Last year, Global NCAP updated its testing procedure to ensure that new cars are even safer than the previous lot.

This will make things really interesting. Since the Nexon might still continue to be underpinned by the same platform, we are not too sure if it will be able to score 5 stars this time around. Note that the other products from the Indian auto giant use updated and modern platforms like the Altroz and the Harrier-Safari cousins. The Altroz is underpinned by the ALFA-ARC platform, whereas the Harrier and Safari are based on the OmegaArc platform which is derived from the D8 platform of Jaguar Land Rover. Therefore, if the platform, of the Nexon is not updated, it might fall short of getting a full 5-star rating this time around.

What We Think
It is a great thing that the Global NCAP is updating its testing standards. The new-age customers are more safety conscious than ever and take the safety rating of a car into consideration before making a purchase decision. Hence, the cars should be put to stringent testing to ensure that they are fully capable of safeguarding passengers during unfortunate incidents on the roads. But we understand that this is no excuse for people to drive recklessly. Hence, we must spread the word around that our safety lies in our own hands first and foremost. The ability of cars to save us in a crash is secondary. Let us keep an eye out to witness what changes Tata makes to ensure that the Nexon remains as safe as it has always been.
