Maruti Jimny has already hit the used car market and so has the recently launched white-coloured Mahindra Thar
We have started to witness the new white-painted Mahindra Thar and the recently launched Maruti Jimny in the used car market. Thar is an established off-roading SUV that received the Everest White paint option this April. The Thar has been the undefeated champion in the lifestyle off-roading segment in India. Until now, there was just one other competitor in this space called the Force Gurkha. However, the largest carmaker in the country, Maruti Suzuki, recently launched its iconic Jimny which is set to rival the aforementioned SUVs. This is the fourth generation Jimny and has already tasted success in many international markets. But this is the first time it has been launched in a 5-door guise ever.

The video has been uploaded by Dayakaran vlogs on YouTube. It captures a detailed walk-around tour of the two SUVs parked at a used car dealership in Punjab. The vlogger compares the two from the exterior at first. The Thar is significantly wider than the Jimny which is also suggested by its 1,855 mm width compared to 1,645 mm of the Jimny. Similarly, it is taller at 1,844 mm than Jimny’s 1,720 mm. Both these SUVs measure a similar 3,985 mm in length. Moreover, the Jimny has a projector headlamp setup with generous use of chrome at the front while the Thar gets halogen headlamps.

Similarly, the side profile of the Thar is more dominating with massive 18-inch alloy wheels and chunky wheel arches. On the other hand, the Jimny has 15-inch alloys but offers the convenience of 5 doors enhancing the ingress and egress characteristics. On the inside, the Jimny feels quite nice with a large touchscreen display on the centre console, a combination of retro and modern design pattern for the instrument cluster, a decent audio system and more. However, the YouTuber feels the lack of space due to a narrow cabin. On the Thar, the cabin is wider which is felt with the seating as well. Note, that you can remove the roof if you wish but you can’t do the same with the Jimny.

What We Think
Mahindra Thar continues to be the go-to lifestyle off-roading SUV that people love for its road presence and legacy. It also has more powerful engines. However, it lacks practicality because of having just 3 doors and almost unusable boot space. It is also the more expensive of the two. On the other hand, the Jimny is more compact but has practicality. Moreover, it undercuts the Thar quite significantly in terms of pricing. Hence, both these SUVs have their own charm and will find application for various kinds of buyers.
