The Model S Plaid from Tesla is one of the fastest production EVs on the planet and the Nurburgring Lap has confirmed that.
Tesla Model S Plaid has set a new record at the Nurburgring circuit recently. Nurburgring is the iconic testing track in Germany where car models from all over the world are tested. Note that the Model S Plaid had already featured on this circuit back in 2021 where its performance was quite impressive. But it has been able to outdo itself considerably this time around. This points out just how capable the production EV is in this performance-focused trim with the addition of the track pack. Here are the details.

Tesla Model S Plaid Nurburgring Record
This video has been uploaded by Tesla on its official YouTube channel. It showcases the entire lap. It is also clear that this version uses the traditional round steering wheel in contrast to the Yoke-steering used in the race the last time around. The dashcam footage captures the entire lap round with all its tricky twists and straight patches. After everything is set and done, the Tesla Model S Plaid was able to clock a ground and record-breaking time of a jaw-dropping 7:25:231. This is over 10 secs faster than the factory Model S’ 7:35:579 from 2021. Also, this is over 8 seconds faster than the 7:33:350 of the Porsche Taycan Turbo S with Performance Kit last year.

Track Pack
This EV was equipped with a special track pack that has components to squeeze out the maximum performance from the Model S Plaid. This includes aluminium forged wheels, track-ready tires, brake fluid, new carbon-silicon carbide rotors and one-piece forged callipers with high-performance pads. All these components are necessary to ensure that they are able to handle the extremely high speeds on the racing track. These make the EV reach a top speed of 200 mph after the necessary tuning of the software. It costs $15,000 – $20,000.

Elon Musk is still more ambitious about the EV for the future. He said in a popular interview with Joe Rogan, “We’re trying to get to, on the Nurburgring, get to the low-7-minute mark. And then, with further improvements, I think we could bust 7 minutes on the Nurburgring, which would be a pretty wicked act on its own.” This indicates that he has distinct modifications in mind to achieve that sub-7 minute time to complete this dreaded Nurburgring lap. We shall keep an eye out for that.
