Electric cars are getting more and more popular day by day, which means even their accidents are increasingly becoming common
In a recent development, a Tata Nexon EV crashed and caught fire. The electric version of Tata’s popular compact SUV is the most popular electric car in the country. It has around 75% market share of the country which is impressive. It is based on the ICE-powered Nexon which is already a hit in our market. Its appeal lies in multiple characteristics including modern features, bold styling, SUV stance, 5-star safety rating at the Global NCAP, options of multiple powertrains, etc. Leveraging that, Tata Motors slapped the electric motor assembly on it and started selling it as an EV too. The results have been impressive, to say the least.

The details of this incident are not clear. In any case, it is evident that the electric compact SUV met with an accident. Thereafter, it was moved to the side of the road either deliberately by the driver or as a result of the crash. Either way, there are huge flames seen emerging at the front section. Generally, the chemicals from the batteries get released when an accident occurs as the batteries are deformed. That is what leads to electric cars catching fire after a serious crash. That looks to be the case here too. No details about the safety of the passengers have been reported.

What We Think
Incidents like these are getting quite common, unfortunately. There are already numerous challenges with the mass adoption of EVs. The fact that people don’t feel secure by owning an electric car is a cause for worry for EV enthusiasts. The government is offering tons of subsidies to promote mass adoption. But concrete issues like the lack of charging infrastructure, range anxiety, high initial prices and safety are some of the reasons why people are not able to take the plunge with confidence. We can only hope that carmakers put some work into this and ensure that the EVs could be completely safe to use in any situation.
