Tesla Model Y with HW4?
HW4 is simply an updated version of HW3, which is the existing hardware found in Tesla cars. We know how excited and ambitious Elon Musk is about autonomous driving. To accomplish that, there are tons of electricals, electronics, cameras, radars, sensors, and other such components needed. In the existing version, most of these are already there. However, there is always room for improvement. It is stated that the HW4 boasts such an improved version of the camera with high-resolution graphics and high pixels for a much crisper and life-like video feed.

The popular Tesla enthusiast, The Kilowatts shared this information on Twitter with a post saying, “Alright based solely on Fremont delivery parking lot VIN’s, it seems Tesla Fremont switched to HW4 on All Model Ys around F789400. So if you’ve got a Fremont built Y that ends with a number >789500, your getting HW4 and if it’s less than <789300, you’re getting HW3.” They say that this new hardware is being equipped on the Model Ys that are being manufactured in Fremont at the moment. Slowly, it might come to the Tesla EVs manufactured elsewhere. Also, we know that the new lot of Tesla cars arriving in Canada are Made in China. Hence, these will also not have this latest hardware upgrade.

What We Think
We know that Elon Musk is passionate about autonomous driving in years to come. But there have to be gradual improvements to the existing technology and hardware from now onwards. Only then will we be able to experience something like that. It is not an overnight miracle. With minor updates to the softwares and hardware like this HW4, the largest EV company on the planet is surely on its way to achieve the goal of fully autonomous driving. However, there are other things to consider like the change in policies and developing infrastructure to support that too.
