We are getting to witness some incredible engineering marvels in India on a daily basis and this is the latest feather in India’s cap.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis drove Lexus LX on India’s longest sea bridge in Mumbai on May 24. This engineering marvel is in its final stage of completion. It is called the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) sea bridge. In addition to the Deputy CM, Eknath Shinde, the Chief Minister was also accompanying him in the front passenger seat. The length of this bridge is an astonishing 22 km. It is slated to be completed by the end of this year, around November. Here are the details.

This bridge goes above the sea for around 16.5 km and on-land for about 5.5 km. It starts from Sewri in South Mumbai and ends at Charlie in Nhava Sheva. The bridge has a six-lane access-controlled freeway reducing the time to travel from South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai from 60 mins to just 16 mins. As a result, even areas like Raigad will get better connectivity to the upcoming Navi Mumbai international airport. Furthermore, the travel time to the prominent adjacent cities like Pune and Goa will come down quite a bit.

With the construction of such mega-projects, the travel time is greatly reduced. Moreover, pollution is also reduced as cars are driven at an optimal RPM range. In city traffic, the emissions from vehicles are the highest. Finally, this project also took into consideration the protection of the habitat of the flamingo birds that migrate to Mumbai every year and the habitat in the marshlands. Therefore, this sea bridge has economic, infrastructural, as well as ecological benefits.
