Maruti will officially launch the Jimny in our market on June 7, but the first drive reviews are out which you can watch on our YouTube channel.
Maruti Jimny is among the most-awaited off-roaders in our market and we compare it to the most popular compact SUV in our market, Tata Nexon. Jimny has been given to the media houses for a test drive recently and it promises to be one of the best off-roaders at this price range (although the official price list is not out yet). It will appeal to a whole lot of customers looking for an affordable hardcore off-roader. On the other hand, the Nexon is an urban-friendly compact SUV that is geared more toward people using it on paved roads more often.

Off-Road-Ready
The prime reason for anyone to buy Maruti Jimny has to be its off-roading prowess. It has proven its mettle in various international markets since time immemorial. Although the 5-door version is developed for Indian customers, the media test drive promises that it will still live upto its expectations of being a thoroughbred off-roader. On the other hand, the Nexon is built on a repurposed X1 platform that debuted on the Indica way back in 1998. The compact SUV has a FWD layout, which is best suited for city conditions.
Refined Petrol Engine with Linear Delivery
In terms of the driving experience, the Maruti Jimny has a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engine that is quite refined and linear in its power delivery. The driver could anticipate how the engine would react under mild or hard throttle inputs. On the contrary, the Nexon features a 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine that has the typical turbo boost (and lag) making the driving experience slightly different than the regular petrol mills. Make no mistake, the Nexon Petrol is still a better performer at high speeds, but in most conditions, a smoother engine with a more linear power delivery will be appreciated.
Well-sorted Dynamics
Interestingly, the ride quality and handling characteristics of the Jimny are surprisingly well-sorted despite the former being underpinned by a ladder-frame chassis best suited for hardcore and rugged off-road adventures. We were pleasantly surprised by the way Jimny rides and handles. That makes it great for people who love to go on long trips with families on and off the tarmac.

Fresher Car
The 5-door version of the Jimny is debuting for the first time ever while the Nexon has been around for over 6 years now. The latter was launched in September 2017 and has performed extremely well for the Indian auto giant. But the Jimny is the newer car of the two that will first launch in June 2023 (next month) in the 5-door guise.
Sales & Aftersales
At the risk of belabouring the point, it is a well-known fact that no other car marque can even come close to beating MSIL when it comes to the dense sales and service network. In fact, that is one of the main reasons why it has been the biggest carmaker in the country for decades now. People buy it without having to think about finding service centres or spare parts as the touchpoints are spread across the country. Tata Motors is surely increasing its sales and aftersales network too but Maruti Suzuki is miles ahead already.
