In a solid push for electrification, as many as 5 popular SUVs like Hyundai Creta, Tata Safari and Harrier will soon get an electric variant
The EV segment is steadily growing in the Indian market. In fiscal year 2022-23, it crossed the 1 million mark in terms of sales. A total of 1,152,021 EVs were sold in FY 2023. This includes e-two-wheelers, e-three-wheelers, e-four-wheelers, and e-buses. While the two-wheeler industry sold 726,976 units (62 percent), the demand for electric passenger cars is growing as well. Most manufacturers are planning to bring electric iterations of the popular ICE (internal combustion engine) models. Let’s take a look at the five popular SUVs that are getting electric powertrains.

Hyundai Creta EV
The South Korean brand is expected to launch the much-awaited Hyundai Creta EV in early 2025. Apart from few cosmetic changes, the upcoming model (codenamed SU2i EV) will look similar to its ICE counterpart. It is likely to share its powertrain with the Kona EV. To recall, the Hyundai Kona EV is backed by a 39.2kWh lithium-ion battery. The permanent magnet synchronous motor offers 136bhp of power and 395Nm of torque. The Hyundai Creta EV will compete with Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming eVX electric SUV.

Mahindra XUV700 EV
Mahindra XUV700 is one of the most popular SUVs in the Indian market. Next year, it will be available with an electric powertrain as well. Mahindra is currently working on the XUV700 EV, which will be introduced under the company’s new XUV.e sub-brand.
As per recent reports, the upcoming EV will be based on Mahindra’s new INGLO modular platform. It will be longer (by 45mm), wider (by 10mm) and taller (by 5mm). The upcoming EV is said to come with a longer wheelbase as well (by 7mm). It will sport a closed-off front grille, bumper-mounted headlamps, a sharply designed bonnet, full-width LED light bars, and an angular stance. The up to 80kWh battery will power the AWD (all-wheel drive) system. It will offer 230bhp – 350bhp of power.

Tata Harrier/ Safari EV
Tata Motors is working on electric versions of its most popular SUVs. Both the Harrier and Safari SUVs will be available with electric powertrains in the coming years. While the Safari EV is still in the testing phase, the Tata Harrier EV concept was showcased at this year’s Auto Expo. The production version is likely to stay true to the concept. It is built on Tata’s new Sigma (Gen 2) platform and comes with an AWD system. The 60kWh battery will offer a range of around 400-500km. Additional features include Vehicle-to-load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) charging capabilities.

Tata Punch EV
The Tata Punch will be the first on the list to hit the market. It is expected to be used in the second half of 2023 (possibly near the festive season). The electric car will be based on the new Sigma platform which can accommodate larger batteries. It is expected to come with 26kWh and 30.2kWh battery packs (seen on the Tiago EV and Nexon EV respectively). The Tata Punch EV will come with several changes like a closed-off front grille, revised bumpers, blue highlights, and newly-designed alloy wheels. The ICE version of the micro SUV is one of Tata’s top-selling SUVs.
