Dubai is all set to leap into the future of urban public transportation with the launch dates of the flying taxis and vertiports being revealed by Sheikh Mohammed, UAE Vice President.
The plans for flying taxis and vertiports in Dubai have been revealed. The UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has approved the designs of Dubai’s next ambitious project. Vertiports refers to the air taxi stations that will be developed strategically in the country to enhance aerial connectivity. These will be developed by RTA. With the operations set to commence by 2026, Dubai aims to be the world’s first city with a fully developed network of vertiports.

Flying Taxis and Vertiports in Dubai
Under the emirate’s new sustainable urban mobility solutions initiative, the aerial taxis will run connecting 4 major areas in Dubai – Dubai International Airport, Downtown Dubai — Burj Khalifa area—, Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina. These can accommodate upto 4 passengers and a pilot. The top speed of these taxis is around 300 km/h and the maximum range is 241 km. The initial phase will have the manufacturers and operators testing their technology and determining sites for vertiport installations.

As a part of that, the infrastructure would involve finalizing sites and designated zones for take-off and landing, passenger waiting areas, security protocols and electric charging stations. The aim is to have a harmonized infrastructure to accommodate all forms of sustainable electric mobility like EVs. The next step will involve recognising the appropriate investors, engineers and architects to have the infrastructure ready for the air mobility industry.

The models for the vertiports were unveiled at the RTA’s stand at the World Government Summit 2023. In fact, the first vertiport will be located near the Dubai International Airport (DXB) which is among the busiest in the world. It will feature two levels of car parking, a terminal for aerial taxis on the rooftop connecting the Emirates metro Station via an air-conditioned bridge. There will be 4 stands to accommodate taxis and two landing platforms. More details will be unveiled closer to the launch.
