Economies of scale is an important aspect for every car manufacturer in India and this strategy has actually evolved of the years. One of the best example of this strategy in India is the volumes pulling duo 2011 Maruti Swift and Maruti Swift Dzire. The convention followed by Maruti Suzuki was that they introduced Swift first in the market, which is a hatchback, and then launched Dzire which is essentially a Swift but with an added boot.
The first brand who actually adopted this hatch-sedan strategy was Fiat. More than a decade ago, Fiat introduced Palio and then launched Palio Stile, the sedan version of the same. Later Tata followed Fiat’s its footsteps and launched Indica and Indigo. Then it was Maruti followed by Volkswagen with its Volkswagen Vento – Polo duo. Skoda also joined the league and introduced Skoda Fabia and Skoda Rapid duo. Even Toyota created ripples in the market with Toyota Etios Liva and Etios sedan.
According to new reports, now Honda SIEL India is also planning to launch a sedan that will interestingly be based on the Honda Brio. The Honda Brio Sedan is under development and will be launched in 2013 and will be positioned much lower than its most popular model, Honda City. Positioning it below City will definitely help Honda attract more and more customers which were other reluctant as City is the only option.
Alike the Brio small car, initially the Brio sedan will be marketed in Thailand first after which it will come to the Indian subcontinent, probably by the fourth quarter that will fall close to the festive season of Diwali. Moreover an all new Honda 7 seater multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), based on the Brio platform is also on the cards and could be added to India soon. The MPV is speculated to be named as Brio MPV and its production will begin in India by late 2014 or early 2015. Before the sedan or the multi-passenger vehicle, what is more important for the brand is the Honda Brio Diesel and we desperately await its launch. Stay tuned for more updates on Honda.
