There have been series of information (and rumours) floating around for quite sometime about the upcoming 2012 Maruti 800 CC Car which will replace the old Maruti 800 model which has been a flagship model for Maruti Suzuki for decades. There were lot of speculations about the Suzuki Cervo making its way to India in 2012, but as per our sources close to Maruti, the Maruti Cervo will not launch in India as per the present plans, instead a new car, based on the Maruti Alto 800 CC car platform only will be launched. The car is already under testing at Maruti Suzuki India and will replace the Maruti 800. As per fresh media report by Wall Street Journal, this new car will not only replace the Maruti 800 which is out of production by now, but also it will replace the Maruti Alto 800 CC car which has seen decline is sales after petrol price hikes seen in past couple of years.
Indian car buyers prefer newer models with newer technology over an old design car which is one of the reasons behind this possible replacement of Maruti Alto 800. Although there has been no official confirmation on replacing the Alto 800, supplier sources have revealed that the Alto K10 (1000 CC model of Maruti Alto) will continue to sell while the Alto 800 will be replaced with the new 800 CC car. The new car will be built on same Alto platform but will have an all new body and design. It is expected to be priced between Rs. 1.9 Lakhs to Rs. 2.5 Lakhs for different models / trim levels. It is expected to improve upon the quality, aesthetics and features of the new small car to cope up with the competition and buyer’s expectations.
Gradually declining sales, plain interiors, increased competition from competing products like Hyundai Eon etc. are some factors which seem to support the information. The price of Petrol compared to diesel is quite high in India and is causing a gradual decline in the sales of petrol cars as the demand for diesel engine cars is higher than the petrol cars. Maruti Suzuki recently announced plans for a diesel engine plant with Rs. 1700 Crore Investment and R&D facility for Rs. 900 Crore. Rumors are also running around that Maruti will develop its own version of a 1000 CC or smaller diesel engine for Maruti Wagon R Diesel to scale up its sales volumes as the competing cars like Beat diesel is generating good sales volumes.
