Mahindra XUV400 NOT Bigger XUV300 But Simply Ssangyong Tivoli with Electric Drivetrain

Mahindra recently unveiled the XUV400 and the launch is slated to take place at the beginning of 2023 marking the entrance into the EV space.

The Mahindra XUV400 is said to be the bigger version of the XUV300 but, essentially it is the electric version of the Ssangyong Tivoli. In fact, the XUV300 was reduced in size because of the tax benefits on vehicles under 4 m long. The donor model is actually 4.2 m in length and the XUV400 is able to take advantage of the increased dimensions because the rule of reduced tax under 4m long vehicles is not applicable for EVs.

Mahindra XUV400 Based on Ssangyong Tivoli

At the unveiling ceremony, the Mahindra officials were constantly telling everyone that the XUV400 is much bigger than the XUV300 on which it is based. But we know the reason why it is so. The XUV300 was manufactured in India based on the Tivoli. At the time, Mahindra and Ssangyong were partners. Tivoli was the SUV on which Mahindra could have easily developed a compact and a mid-size SUV. That led to the inception of the XUV300. But Mahindra trimmed it a bit to fit it into that under 4 m length bracket. As a result, it was able to price it competitively.

However, the rule is not applicable to EVs which is why Mahindra took full advantage of that and made the XUV400 4.2 m long. This sorts out the issue of boot space, which is prevalent with the XUV300. However, the Nexon EV (it is still under 4 m in length) doesn’t have that luxury which is why the XUV400 will be significantly longer than the Nexon, which it will go up against. The dimensions of the Mahindra XUV400 are as follows.

Specs

The XUV400 will come with a 39.4 kWh IP67 rated LFP battery powering the electric motor that will produce a healthy 150 hp and 310 Nm of peak power and torque. These figures will allow a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of around 8.3 seconds which is very impressive. The top speed is limited to around 150 km/h. More importantly, the range of the XUV400 is rated at 456 km in ideal conditions. Using the 50 kW DC fast charger, the 0-80% comes up in just 50 mins, while the standard 3.3 kW/16 A domestic socket will fill up the juice from 0-100% in 13 hours.
