We all know that the construction of highways involves large-scale disruption of property at times. This is yet another example of it.
A farmer in Punjab moves his house 500 ft to allow the construction of an expressway. It is widely known that an extensive land acquisition process has to be followed before constructing highways. Proper clearances have to be taken from the government departments if forest land is involved and adequate compensation has to be paid to the people if their private land or constructed houses have to be acquired. This case is a prime example of the latter. But what happens when the house owner refuses to take the compensation?

Punjab Farmer Moves His House For Expressway Construction
The video clip shows that the house is being bolted up to some wooden planks to move from one place to another. According to the report, Sukhwinder Singh Sukhi, the owner of this house is a farmer in Sangrur. He built this house between 2017 and 2019. The house stands on the land owned by his family. The total cost of building this dream house was Rs 1.50 Crore back then. In order to construct the Delhi-Jammu-Katra expressway, a part of this land is needed which means that this house needs to be demolished. However, the owner refused the compensation and decided to move the entire house instead.

To allow the expressway requires the built house to be moved around 500 ft from its original position. A private contractor has commissioned the job for Rs 50 lakh. A large number of labor workers move the house around 10 ft every day. This has been going on for a couple of months and the house has already moved around 250 ft. If everything goes as planned, the house would reach its destination within the next couple of months. This is a unique case of how much people value their property.

Also, the farmer mentions that it took two years to build this house and he was not willing to spend so much time again to construct a new house. That is the reason why he resorted to this measure. Once complete, this expressway will reduce the travel time considerably. This will be yet another project under the Government’s ambitious Bharatmala initiative aimed to connect the country with expressways.
