Mercedes-Benz is the parent of the globally popular small car brand Smart and for a long time it is being speculated that it will be launching the brand in India soon. Unfortunately it hasn’t happened yet but it may launch the same by 2014, as per the latest news. Recently Mercedes conducted a feasibility study for the Smart brand in India and it is expected that the result has been favorable enough. So by 2014 we may see the launch of Smart brand in India.
Over the years not much has been changed as far as the design is concerned but the models to enter the Indian market will be distinct. Mercedes is jointly working with Renault–Nissan, its global partner, on new models for its Smart brand. Also Mercedes could commence sourcing engines and components from the Chennai based Renault-Nissan plant. Smart is an iconic product from Mercedes Benz just like the Volkswagen Beetle, Fiat 500, Mini Cooper are for respective brands. Smart will not be a volume product for Mercedes Benz in India, rather it will create a brand presence in India.

In terms of practicality, no doubt the Smart ForTwo is a great product. It is compact, adequately powerful and ideal for city conditions. What makes the car even more special is the drivetrain options available, Petrol, Diesel and Electric. The gasoline variant features a 999 CC, 3 cylinder unit that comes with various power options such as 61 BHP, 71 BHP and 84 BHP, the last one being turbocharged. The same delivers 19-20 KMPL of fuel efficiency.
The diesel variant equips a 799 CC, 3 cylinder CRDi diesel engine producing 54 BHP of max power and delivers a claimed fuel efficiency of 30.3 KMPL.

Talking about the dimensions of the car,the car is 2700 mm in length which means it is 400 mm shorter than our very own Tata Nano. Now that is called compact. Comparing it with Nano, Smart ForTwo looks very sporty and enhancing its appeal is the bold radiator grille, unique head lamp and tail lamp cluster. The dual tone colour theme on the outside, starting from the front pillars and ending on the sides, is very refreshing and appealing.
