The fact that Mahindra is preparing the 5-door version of the Thar is no secret to anyone and here is some more information on the same.
According to the latest reports, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will be underpinned by the same platform as the recently launched Scorpio N. At the launch ceremony of the Scorpio N, R Velusamy, Senior Vice President, Head – Automotive Product Development at Mahindra explained all the mechanical changes made to the chassis, suspension and other components of the Scorpio to make it more stable and comfortable. Now, he has confirmed that a lot of these elements will be carried to the upcoming 5-door Thar.

5-Door Mahindra Thar To Have Same Platform As Scorpio N
R Velusamy mentioned at the Scorpio N launch event that he was not satisfied with the high-speed stability of the SUV. That is why they made a ton of engineering changes to the platform leading up to the final product. The platform consists of around 80% high-strength steel (HSS) for added stiffness resulting in great handling abilities. To ensure that the ride quality is not compromised due to the stiffer chassis, the new Penta-link suspension was installed on the Scorpio N. The Scorpio N measures 4.7 m, while the 5-door Thar would be somewhere around 4.3 m. Hence, depending on the exact length, a few tweaks will be made to the parameters.

The main issue with the current Thar is the impractical cabin. Only 4 people can be seated in the SUV as the massive wheel arches intrude into the cabin space. Secondly, the boot space is not usable at all which makes multi-day trips difficult. But the 5-door version will solve all these problems. Also, the track width of the Scorpio N is 60 mm more than the Thar. We might see that on the 5-door version too. The rivals include the upcoming 5-door Maruti Jimny and the upcoming 5-door Force Gurkha.
