Check out this unique tug of war between the petrol and diesel versions of the Mahindra Thar. Thar is the most popular lifestyle off-roader in our market. The demand for the SUV is soaring and it commands long waiting times for some variants in some cities. The latest off-roading equipment and traditional styling make it an attractive offering for a whole bunch of people. Before, we begin, we must apprise our readers of the fact that tug of war could cause severe damage to the engine and other mechanical components. The YouTubers might have taken appropriate precautions but we don’t recommend you do it with your personal cars.

Mahindra Thar Petrol vs Diesel – Tug War
The petrol version has a 6-speed manual transmission, while the diesel variant has a 6-speed manual. In the first attempt, the diesel Thar is able to pull the petrol variant quite effortlessly. However, the driver of the petrol Thar is new and had not turned the Traction Control OFF. He did that for the second round which resulted in a deadlock between the two. Since the torque figures are essentially the same, no one was able to pull the other. In the subsequent rounds, the diesel version was able to trounce the petrol model but it must be noted that the driver of the Thar diesel was starting to accelerate prematurely every single time. These attempts were made on a surface with dirt.

After a while, they took the Thars out on a tarmac road. However, the result didn’t change much because the driver of the diesel version kept starting early. In the end, they switched the drivers and the result was logical. It was a dead draw as both SUVs refused to move an inch. It can be concluded that the petrol and diesel versions of the Thar boast a similar performance.

The Thar comes with 2 engine options, a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, and a 2-litre turbo-petrol. The oil-burner makes 130 PS/320 Nm of peak figures while the petrol makes 150 PS/320 Nm of max figures. Transmission options for both the powertrains are a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic with a low range box. You also get a transfer case and a mechanically locking centre differential. The prices of the Thar range between Rs 13.53 lakh and Rs 16.03 lakh, ex-showroom. The only direct rival is the Force Gurkha which has also recently received a new-gen upgrade.
