The Hyundai Kona Electric is one of the first electric SUVs in our market. However, the market share has been captured by Tata Nexon EV. Could the updated version help the sales?
The next-gen Hyundai Kona SUV has been rendered digitally in this video. In India, this premium crossover is on sale in electric avatar only. Needless to say, the market share and sales of EVs are on a constant rise globally. The Indian market is not lagging behind either despite the lack of infrastructure around EVs in most parts of the country. But the government schemes and rapidly developing charging infrastructure in selected metro cities could propel the masses to try an EV as their second car. Hyundai Kona Electric has struggled to achieve big sales numbers. But an updated version based on the vehicle rendered below could definitely prove to be a big boost.

Next-Gen Hyundai Kona Electric
Launched in July 2019 in India, the Kona Electric is due for a generation update or at least, a massive facelift anyway. The digital designer has ensured that the front end represents the eco-friendly nature of the SUV with LED DRLs on the bonnet joined together by a glossy black bar, a massive black frame in place of the grille, projector headlamps on the side below the DRLs, sporty bumper with skid plate, chunky wheel arches housing stylish dual-tone diamond-cut alloy wheels, blacked-out A, B and C-pillars, black side body cladding, black roof rails, relatively simple ad subtle side profile with no sharp creases but a curvy line towards the rear.

The video also compares the design with the camouflaged version to get the dimensions and silhouette perfectly. In a side-by-side comparison with the current-gen model, this next-gen variant looks a bit more aggressive and expansive at the front. In terms of the mechanicals, it would be interesting to see if Hyundai makes any changes. Currently, the Kona Electric comes with a 39.2 kWh battery pack that power the electric motor to produce 136 PS and 395 Nm of peak power and torque respectively. The regular AC charge takes 6 hours 10 mins to charge the battery fully while the 50 kW DC fast charger could charge the battery from 0-80% in 57 mins.

The Kona Electric has an ARAI certified range of 452 km on a single charge. The prices of Kona Electric in India are Rs 23.79 lakh and Rs 23.98 lakh, ex-showroom for the dual-tone variant.
