The sales report for the month of May 2021 indicates a gradual but robust recovery of the Indian automobile industry after the recent lockdown. Compared to the same month last year after the first lockdown, May 2021 saw a substantial increase in the number of passenger vehicles sold. One of the most popular segments in the country also continues to contribute largely to the overall sales in the country. How exactly did the compact SUVs performed, let us find out?

Kia Sonet – 6,627 Units
Kia continues to impress with its popularity of the SUVs in our market. In the month of May 2021, Kia sold an impressive 6,627 units of the Sonet. This marks the highest-selling sales figure for the segment for the month. Kia had recently tweaked the variant lineup a bit to make the compact SUV more accessible to the customers.

Tata Nexon – 6,439 Units
The Nexon is slowly making its way to the top and managed to secure the second spot for itself in terms of the overall monthly sales which is no mean feat. In May 2021, Tata sold over 6,400 units of the Nexon compared to a mere 623 in the same month last year. The practicality and cost-effective 5-star Safety Rated compact SUV keeps on attracting new customers month after month.
Hyundai Venue – 4,840 Units
Hyundai Venue saw itself dropping down to the third spot on the list with over 4,800 units being sold in May 2021. One of the most popular SUVs in the segment sold over 1,200 units in the same month last year.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza – 2,648 Units
It is a bit surprising to see the Vitara Brezza at the fourth spot on sales charts for the month of May, where it managed to sell only 2,648 units in our market. In the same month last year, Maruti sold 572 units of the Brezza in India. There are rumours of the next-gen Vitara Brezza coming to our market soon.
Mahindra Thar – 1,911 Units
The lifestyle off-roader has taken the market by storm and the carmaker is struggling to keep up with the demand and reduce the waiting periods. In May 2021, Mahindra sold an incredible 1,911 units of the Thar which is a lot for an off-roading vehicle. Experiencing this popularity, Mahindra is also considering the bring in a more practical 5-door version of the Thar to increase its appeal.

Renault Kiger – 1,326 Units
The very popular and one of the most affordable compact SUVs in the country, Renault Kiger continues to impress with its consistent sales. In May 2021, Renault managed to sell over 1,300 units which is quite a healthy figure considering the lockdown.
Nissan Magnite – 1,200 Units
The cousin of the Kiger, Nissan Magnite was sold 1,200 times in May 2021 indicating the popularity of the compact SUV. Extremely aggressive prices and modern features are some of the main selling points of the Magnite.

Ford EcoSport – 503 Units
The newly launched SE variant had given a bit of freshness to the EcoSport lineup in India. In the month of May 2021, Ford sold over 500 units of the EcoSport compared to a mere 331 units in the same month last year.
Toyota Urban Cruiser – 373 Units
The bade engineered Brezza sold only 373 units in May 2021 compared to none in the same month last year. The low sales of the Brezza have somehow affected the sales of the Urban Cruiser as well.

Mahindra XUV300 – 251 Units
The only SUV to record extremely low sales in May compared to what it sold a year ago is the Mahindra XUV300. In May 2021, Mahindra sold a disappointing 251 units of the XUV300 compared to a healthy 1,257 units in May 2020. The upcoming more powerful XUV300 might grab the attention of the customers.
Honda WR-V – 192 Units
The Honda WR-V has never been the SUV to bring in large volumes for Honda. In May 2021, Honda sold just 192 units of the WR-V compared to almost similar 114 units a year ago.
