The sales report for the month of May are out and they are better than the same month last year. Now, of course, there is no point in comparing these sales to the last month because the country was in lockdown in May and that has affected the automobile industry significantly. Still, the numbers are a whole lot better than what some people might have predicted. In this article, we are going to discuss the performance of the premium hatchback segment which includes products like Baleno, i20, Altroz and more. So, let us dive straight into it.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno – 4,803 Units
The largest carmaker in the country continues to post strong sales irrespective of the pandemic. The very popular Baleno saw just above 4,800 units being sold in India in the month of May 2021. Compared to May 2020 where it sold just under 1,600 units, this is a substantial increase in the sales.

Hyundai i20 – 3,440 Units
The trend-setter, Hyundai i20 remains consistent as ever in terms of monthly sales with 3,440 units sold in May 2021. Hyundai had managed to sell a mere 878 units in the same month last year. The current-gen i20 is a whole lot more expensive than its competitors but then it packs in a ton of features and powertrain options to justify that price tag.

Tata Altroz – 2,896 Units
The only 5-star Safety Rated hatchback in the country is also amongst the crowd favourites in our market. Last month, the Altroz outsold i20 which was a huge achievement for the homegrown carmaker. This time around as well, it is not too far off with just under 2,900 units being sold compared to around 1,370 units in May 2020. Plenty of safety kit, modern features and flexible powertrain options are some of the strong points of the Altroz.
Volkswagen Polo – 1,107 Units
The German carmaker has sold just over 1,100 units of its Polo hatchback in India in May 2021. Compared to the same month last year, this number is almost the same. Last year, VW sold 1,126 units of Polo. VW might be thinking of bringing the next-gen Polo to India but its current focus is on Taigun, the Creta-rivalling mid-size SUV bound to launch around October 2021.

Toyota Glanza – 298 Units
The badge-engineered version of Baleno generally brings a lot of sales for Toyota as well. However, in May 2021, Toyota managed to sell a disappointing 298 units compared to 507 units in May 2020. This can be attributed to the lockdown alone and from this month onwards, we do expect to see a rise in sales.

Honda Jazz – 214 Units
Honda sold 214 units of its premium hatchback, the Jazz. It did not sell any in the same month last year. There has been no update for the Jazz for a long time and this might offer the customers some better alternatives in the form of some of its competitors which could be the chief reason for such low sales.
It is also important to mention here that the Ford Freestyle did not sell any units in May 2021 which is why we have not included it on the list.
