We are back with the sales report of the popular mid-size SUV segment for the month of May 2021. The industry and the country were in lockdown and that has affected the sales for this month. Therefore, the sales figures have to be taken with a pinch of salt. However, the overall sales have been substantially higher than in May 2020, which was also the month after the first lockdown in India. Therefore, comparing these numbers with the year before gives a fair idea of how the industry and customers are recovering from the lockdown phase. Let us take a look at how this segment performed in May 2021.

Hyundai Creta – 7,527 Units
The most popular and highest-selling car of May 2021, Hyundai Creta managed to sell a whopping 7,527 units outselling every other car in the country. This is a testament to the popularity of Creta in our market. Compared to May 2020, where Hyundai sold 3,212 units of the Creta, this is an exponential increase in sales.

Kia Seltos – 4,277 Units
The sibling of the Creta, Kia Seltos, also managed to perform exceedingly well on the sales charts in May 2021. Kia sold over 4,200 units of the mid-size SUV Seltos compared to a mere 1,611 units a year ago.
Tata Harrier and Safari – 2,896 Units
The very popular Harrier and Safari duo from Tata Motors continue to impress with a strong sales performance in May 2021 amidst the pandemic. Together, Tata sold just under 2,900 units in May 2021 compared to mere 161 units of Harrier last year. Safari was not launched back then.

Mahindra Scorpio – 1,782 Units
The old workhorse from Mahindra continues to deliver sales. In May 2021, Mahindra sold just under 1,800 units of the Scorpio in our market compared to just 713 units in the same month last year. The next-gen model of the Scorpio is seen testing multiple times and the launch in 2021 is almost imminent.

MG Hector and Hector Plus – 1,231 Units
The Safari and Harrier rivalling, Hector and Hector Plus are struggling to keep up with the success of the former SUVs. In the month of May 2021, MG could only sell 1,231 units of the Hector products which is still almost double what it did in the same month last year (672 units).
Jeep Compass – 475 Units
The premium mid-size SUV, Jeep Compass, did well to secure 475 units of sales in May 2021 compared to a mere 93 units sold in May 2020. This can be attributed to the launch of next-gen Compass which has seen significant updates compared to the outgoing model.

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross – 231 Units
The crossover SUV from Maruti Suzuki managed a sales figure of only 231 units in May 2021. However, in the same month last year, Maruti did not sell a single unit of the S-Cross in India.
Mahindra XUV500 – 217 Units
The XUV500 is soon to be replaced with XUV700 for our market. In May 2021, Mahindra sold a mere 217 units of the XUV500 compared to only 36 units in the same month last year. The reason could be that people are waiting eagerly for the launch of the new XUV700.

Renault Duster – 32 Units
Renault Duster has been struggling to get healthy sales in our market for months now. In May 2021, Renault saw just 32 units being sold in our market compared to 138 units in May 2020. This clearly indicates the decreasing popularity of the Duster in favour of some new products in the segment.
Nissan Kicks – 12 Units
The Nissan Kicks is facing a similar fate as the Renault Duster with customers just not interested in buying these products at all. May 2021 saw Renault selling a disappointing 12 units in India compared to 74 units in May 2020 a year ago.
