The car sales report for the month of May 2021 is out and the news is decent. Obviously, we have to consider the fact that much of the country was in lockdown for almost the entire month. Still, the automobile industry did better than what it did a year ago. In May 2020 as well, the country was reeling under the pandemic and the economy was down. Here is a brief overview of how the major carmakers performed in the month of May 2021.

Maruti Suzuki – 32,903 Units
The largest car manufacturer sold just under 33,000 units in our market in the month of May 2021. This is a huge improvement from what it sold in May 2020, which was around 13,700 units. Maruti Suzuki aided the Government’s efforts to fight the virus by manufacturing Oxygen equipment in its facilities when the production of the vehicles was stooped.

Hyundai – 25,001 Sales
The largest SUV manufacturer in the country saw over 25,000 units being sold in India in May 2021. This is substantially higher than what it did in the same month last year. In May 2020, Hyundai managed to sell mere 6,800-odd units. Hyundai has also been helping out with the pandemic.
Tata Motors – 15,181 Sales
The homegrown auto giant, Tata sold over 15,000 units in the month of May 2021, compared to around 3,000 units a year before. Tata has planned to launch its micro-SUV, codenamed HBX in our market soon.

Kia – 11,050 Sales
The second-most popular Korean carmaker continues to bring home a ton of sales on the back of Sonet and Seltos in our market. In May 2021, Kia managed to sell over 11,000 units in May 2021, compared to around 1,600 units in May 2020. Kia is going strong with its two popular SUVs.
Mahindra – 8,004 Sales
The other big homegrown carmaker has sold over 8,000 units in May 2021. This is a lot more than the 3,700-odd units it sold in the same month last year. Mahindra is gearing up for an exciting couple of years with a ton of new SUVs planned for our market beginning with the Scorpio and XUV700 this year.

Renault – 2,620 Sales
The French carmaker has also seen consistent growth in India with its trinity of Triber, Kiger and Kwid. In May 2021, Renault sold over 2,600 units compared to around 1,600 units in May 2020.
Honda – 2,032 Sales
The Japanese carmaker managed to cross the 2,000-unit mark with its sales in May 2021. In comparison, it sold a mere 375 units in May 2020. The sales for Honda come mainly from Amaze and City sedans.

Volkswagen – 1,425 Sales
The German carmaker bagged a solid 1,425 units of sales in May 2021 compared to around the same number of sales a year ago. The future of VW is also exciting with a couple of new products due for launch like Taigun and Vento.
Nissan – 1,235 Sales
The Nissan Magnite has been primarily responsible for all the sales of the brand in May 2021. In comparison, it sold a mere 378 units in May 2020.

MG Motors – 1,016 Sales
The British carmaker managed to sell around 1,000 units in May 2021 which largely comprises of the Hector family. It sold a mere 760 units in the same month last year. MG is planning the launch of Creta-rivalling ZS in India soon.
Ford – 766 Sales
The American carmaker has managed to sell only 766 units in May 2021. It sold around 571 units in May 2020. With the joint venture with Mahindra falling through entirely now, it will be interesting to see how Ford plans its future in India.

Skoda – 716 Sales
Skoda is also gearing up for an exciting year with launches like Kushaq, Octavia, Rapid, Kodiaq planned for our market. In May 2021, Skoda sold 716 units compared to May 2020, where it sold around 500 units.
Toyota – 707 Sales
Toyota sold over 707 units in India in the month of May 2021 compared to 1,641 units in May 2020. It is the only carmaker that sold fewer units than what it did in May 2020.

FCA (Jeep) – 475 Sales
Jeep managed to sell 475 units in India compared to just 93 a year ago. Jeep has been trying to grab more market for itself with the newly launched Compass, locally assembled Wrangler and the upcoming 7-seat version of the Compass, codenamed the Commander.
Citroen – 40 Sales
The French luxury carmaker has sold 40 units of its premium SUV, the C5 Aircross in India. This is only the first complete month of the newest carmaker in India and has plans of launching a more mass-market product in a compact SUV real soon.
