Tata Motors have registered the Altroz turbo petrol with the RTO, revealing the premium hatchback will be powered by a 1.2L, three-cylinder turbopetrol engine with 110PS of power, making it the most powerful in its segment alongside the VW Polo GT TSI.
Tata’s first product in the premium hatchback segment – the Altroz – is an extremely well rounded package that surely deserves more attention that it is getting. With stunning looks, great features and space, superb ride and handling balance and of course, a five-star safety rating, the Altroz is one of the most compelling products in its segment. It is however let down by one thing, and that’s its engine. The engines on the Altroz just do not have the performance to match up to the potential of the car. That however is likely to change with the coming of the turbo petrol engine on the Tata Altroz.
Tata has been working on the turbo-petrol variant of the Altroz for quite some time now. We have seen spy images of Altroz turbo on our roads and it was also showcased at last year’s Geneva Motor Show. Now, Tata Motors have registered the Altroz turbo petrol with the RTO, and we have our hands on its performance figures. And now, it finally feels like the Altroz will have the performance to match up to the abilities of its chassis and handling.
The Tata Altroz Turbo will use the 1.2L, three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine from the Nexon, but here it has been tuned to produce 110PS of power, as compared to 120PS on the Nexon. Although we do not have the torque figure for the Altroz Turbo just yet, this engine produces 170Nm of torque in the Nexon. Considering that the torque figure will also be brought down, expect the Altroz Turbo to produce around 150-160Nm of torque. In terms of power, that’s a healthy step up of 25PS from the naturally aspirated petrol engine of the Altroz.

Another trick that could seriously jazz up the Altroz is the addition of a dual-clutch automatic transmission with the new turbo-petrol engine. There are reports that the Altroz turbo will use a DCT gearbox instead of the Nexon’s 6-speed AMT. Currently, the Altroz is only offered with a 5-speed manual transmission for its 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines. Earlier spy shots of the Altroz Turbo suggest that it will be offered with a new blue body shade with ‘Turbo’ badging and it will most likely be offered in the top-spec XZ variants only.

With this new turbo-petrol engine, the Tata Altroz will be the most powerful hatchback in its segment, alongside the Volkswagen Polo 1.0L TSI. Both these cars produce 110PS of power, although the final torque figure on the Altroz Turbo still remains a mystery. For your reference, the Polo 1.0L TSi produces 175Nm of torque. Hyundai too will be launching the next-gen i20 with the 1.0L turbo-petrol engine but it remains to be seen the exact state of tune in which they offer the engine on the i20. Tata Motors could launch the turbocharged Altroz variants by around Diwali this year.
