Tata Motors specifically built a few 4×4 Sumo SUVs for the Indian Army, few of which were sold to the public via auction. One of them has been modified into this beautiful old-school rugged off-roader.
The Tata Sumo is arguably one of the most iconic names in the Indian automotive industry and one that was a hugely popular people mover. Although the Tata Sumo was an SUV, it wasn’t hugely popular as on off-roader or even with the aftermarket modified scene. And that’s really surprising given how Indians love to customize their SUVs. Tata Motors sold the Sumo in a simple 4×2 configuration to the masses but they built some 4×4 variants to be used by the Indian army. Some of these decommissioned 4×4 Sumos were sold to the public through auction and we came across one of them, modified into an extreme off-roader.
Boy, this is what the Sumo should have always been. This particular Sumo has been modified in Hyderabad and was shared on 4×4 India. From the looks of it, there are several modifications to speak about in this vehicle. Although we do not have an exact list of the changes and transformations that has been done on this SUV, we are going to talk about the ones we have been able to spot from these images. We also really like the rugged look of this SUV, something we are used to seeing a Sumo like.
‘So let’s start with the modifications. The face of this Sumo gets a heavy duty off-road spec steel bumper that even has an integrated bull bar. The bumper additionally gets an LED light bar and an electric winch which can be used to pull other vehicles or the Sumo, in case it gets stuck somewhere. The modifiers have also reserved the old-school look of the SUV with headlamps units that remind us of the old-gen Land Rover Defender. There are ever turn indicators mounted on the front fenders, which seems to be a nod to the Mercedes G-Wagon.

There’s also a heavy duty bash plate under the front bumper to protect the mechanical components there. The side profile gets flared black wheel arches and rugged foot steps as well. The driver-side mounted snorkel is a very cool addition and it really accentuated the Sumo’s off-road credentials. The snorkel essentially improves the water wading ability of the SUV and the huge off-road spec tires further help that cause by some additional ground clearance. The rear of the SUV gets a hevy-duty after market bumper with integrated tow hook, old-school after market light and a tail-mounted spare wheel as well, just like the original.

At the rear, we can see that this Sumo is powered by a 3.0L turbocharged diesel engine and comes with 4×4 drivetrain. This engine was then tuned to produce 84 bhp and 250Nm of torque. Although we are not sure, the suspension components too have likely been modified for better off-road capability. On the inside, this Tata Sumo comes with new seats but the rest of the dashboard is identical to the original car. You do get some extra equipment placed on the dashboard. We really love how this Sumo is doing a great job in looking like an old-school hard core off-roader. We bet it goes well too.
