While the upcoming new Mahindra Thar will come as a 3-door SUV, we can expect its 5-door version to come up in the near future.
Mahindra has unveiled the new generation Thar on Independence day and all details regarding it have been revealed. While we are still unsure of the exact dimensions, the features and engine specifications are out. It will get a 3-door format which is still a standout in the Indian market. Many interested buyers have suggested that they would like a 5-door version of it, because it is more practical.
Latest reports suggest that Mahindra is actually considering launch a 5-door version as well. Now, we will get it in the 3-door format because it is a lifestyle SUV mainly focused on the front two people only. However, for general SUV buyers, it may not seem practical. And now, since the SUV is coming off as a daily commuter as well, the ability to seat 5 people comfortably would be an added advantage.

While Mahindra is not planning the 5-door version right now, it might happen in the near future. Probably, Mahindra will first see the response of the Thar after its launch and then decide if the more practical one needs to come. While now it may only appeal to a certain set of buyers, mostly enthusiasts, a 5-door version will also appeal to general SUV buyers with a budget of around 15 Lakhs.
The report further says that Thar could be priced between Rs 9.5 Lakhs up to Rs 15 Lakhs (Ex-showroom). Considering the tons of upgrades it has received, the price hike seems justified. The price announcement is scheduled to happen on 2nd October, following which, the official bookings will also commence. Many Mahindra dealerships have already started accepting pre bookings for a token amount of Rs 25,000.
The new Thar comes with a 2.0 Litre petrol engine and a 2.2 Litre turbo diesel engine, both paired with a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed torque converter. It comes in two versions – LX and AX – which basically means Lifestyle and Off Roading. As expected, the LX variants will be the top-spec variants carrying all the bells and whistles onboard. As for the AX variants, it will get steel wheels and come with a soft top. LX variants will be available either with a hard top or as a convertible (Removable Hard Top).
