BMW is expected to launch the 2 Series Gran Coupe in India by the end of this year and ahead of that, here are some fresh spy images of the car on test in India.
By the end of this year, BMW will have a brand new model in their India portfolio – the 2 Series Gran Coupe. The new 2 Series Gran Coupe is not only a brand new model for India but it’s a completely new model in BMW’s global lineup as well. The car is slated for its launch later this year in India but ahead of that, the BWM 2 Series Gran Coupe has been spied testing in Pune which is its first sighting in India. The test mule was seen wrapped in heavy camouflage and was also wearing some emissions testing equipment.
As can be seen from the spy shots, the BMW 2 Series is surely a handsome looking car. There’s of course the ever growing kidney grille finished in black and the sweptback headlamp units look similar to the ones of the 1 Series. The new 2 Series also gets quite an aggressively redesigned front bumper with larger central and side vents. The car has quite a sporty stance and the rising belt line has been beautifully made to meet the sloping roofline. In fact, in profile the 2-Series Gran Coupe looks a lot like other BMW GT cars like the 5-Series GT and the now discontinued 6-Series GT. Towards the rear, there’s a strong shoulder line and a well sculpted boot with BMW’s L-shaped LED tail-lights.
In terms of dimensions, the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe measures 4,526mm in length, 1,800mm in width and 1,420mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,670mm. In terms of size, the 2-Series Gran Coupe is actually smaller than the Mercedes A-Class Limousine. The 2-Series Gran Coupe is a four-door coupe and it even comes with pillarless doors with a blacked out B-pillar.
On the inside, the sport seats are quite comfortable with a good driving position. Its not very low slung and there’s good visibility as well. Although this might just be a 2-Series but BMW has not compromised on the quality of the cabin either. Unless you look specifically at the lower parts of the dashboard, the quality and fit and finish is absolutely at par with the 3-Series. Moreover, the screen-based instrument panel, steering wheel, vents on the centre console, and the pod around the gear lever have been carried over from the 3-Series.

However, the 2-Series Gran Coupe is certainly a narrower car than the 3-Series and the cabin itself is quite narrow. Seating three abreast in the rear will not be very comfortable either. Also, the rear legroom isn’t quite as much as you’d get in the Mercedes A-Class limousine. People above 6-feet will have some trouble making themselves comfortable. However, with the equipment list and fit and finish at par with the 3-Series, BMW has done quite a good job here.

The 2 Series Gran Coupé is expected to come to India with two engine options. The 220d will come with a 190hp, 2.0-litre diesel engine, while the 220i is expected to get a slightly detuned version of the 140hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that is also expected to do duty in the X1 facelift that’s set to be launched soon. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé’s prices in India are likely to start around Rs 32 lakh, with prices for the top-of-the-line variants going all the way up to Rs 38 lakh (ex-showroom).
