The Mercedes G 63 AMG was always conceived as an off-roader and while most buyers never take it off the tarmac, its good to see what the SUV is really capable of. Enjoy some off-road action.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon is one of the most capable off-roaders out there in the market, right up there with the Land Rovers and Jeeps. However, most people buy it is an luxury SUV and use it just within the cities. Most owners never realize the off-road potential of this very capable SUV but it does not take anything away from the G-Wagon. Be it the standard Mercedes-Benz G 350d or the Mercedes-AMG G63, they are beast of a machine. Here we have a video of a couple of Mercedes G 63 AMG fooling around on the ice and how!
Mercedes-Benz introduced the current-gen G-Wagon in 2018 but it must be noted the two G-Wagons featured here in this video are the previous-gen model which was produced from 2012 to 2018. First up in the video is a drag race between the duo G 63s up a snowy hill. You can see that the hill is pretty steep but the G 63s sail over it like its a cake walk. The white G 63 comes on the power very hard and you can even see taking off in the air but then lands solidly on the ground without losing traction and continues up with speed up the hill.
The black G 63 was a little more gentle on the throttle but even then it makes it up the hill without any fuss. Later in the video, the G 63 can be seen taking on a tug-of war battle with a Lexus LX570 and a Volkswagen Touareg. The LX570 and the G 63 were more evenly matched and although the Lexus tried every bit, it could not nudge the G-Wagon from its place. With a little more effort, the G 63 pulled the LX570 clean. The Volkswagen Touareg on the other hand was no competition at all for the mighty G.

The previous-gen Mercedes G 63 AMG was powered by a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 motor that produced 563 bhp and 760Nm of peak torque. We have a lot of SUVs that produce over 550bhp of power like the Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne and even the Jeep Grand Cherokee trackhawk. However, all these SUVs are performance SUVs and none are as capable off-road as the G-Wagon. The G-Wagon is the most powerful hardcore off-road SUV out there and that makes such tasks a breeze for the mighty SUV. But its not just for power why the G-Wagon is so capable. It comes with proper off-road hardware like a super-tough ladder chassis, three locking differentials, independent front suspension with double wishbones and the low range gearbox.

The current-gen Mercedes G 63 AMG is powered by a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 577bhp and 850Nm of torque. The engine comes mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox. In spite of a downsized engine, there’s more power and torque than before but that’s obvious because technological advancement is inevitable. What hasn’t changed though is the G-Wagon’s sheer off-road capability. It had been conceived as an off-roader since its inception and it will always remain the core of the Mercedes G-Wagon. You might be driving it to your high profile parties but that’s not where it belongs always.
