Hyundai has teased us with a video of the upcoming i20 N undergoing winter testing on a frozen lake in Sweden. The video also reveals several key details about the upcoming hot hatch. Read all about them here.
We knew that Hyundai is coming up with a performance oriented ‘N’ version of the i20 hatchback for a long time now. It was first caught testing in May 2019 but it took Hyundai an entire year and a new-gen model to confirm the coming of the 2020 i20 N. While the Nurburgring has been a regular testing ground for the i20 N, this time, Hyundai has released a video of the i20 N being tested on a frozen lake in Sweden. In this video, the Hyundai i20 N has been put through its paces by WRC ace driver, Thierry Neuville.
Neuville is a multiple-time WRC rally winner and he describes the new i20 N as a “very interesting car. Very precise. Very easy handling. The engine is revving nicely and the noise is very interesting as well.” Going ahead, even a rally-spec version of the next-gen i20 is said to be in the works. But more importantly, this video gives us an important glimpse of much more details of the upcoming i20 N. Although the car is still covered in heavy camouflage at the front and rear, certain details are quite evident.
This performance oriented i20 gets some key visual differentiators that also aid in the performance. It gets an updated grille and front bumpers that house much larger air dams for better cooling of the engine. The wheels are larger 19-inch units with thicker tires and the large front and rear disc brakes are also seen clearly in the car. The brake callipers even come painted in red. At the rear, the i20 N gets a double-barrel exhaust outlet and we bet it will sound very scintillating. The rear bumper has also been tweaked and there’s a mild diffuser as well.

The Hyundai i20 N will be powered by a 1.6 liter turbo-petrol engine that produces 204hp. This will make the i20 N the most popular i20 ever produced. This 1.6L turbo-petrol engine is the same engine that also does duty on the Kia Ceed internationally. The engine produces a peak torque of 260Nm and it will come mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. There are even talks of a 6-speed manual gearbox for the i20 N and that will be something to really look out for. A 200hp hot hatch with a manual gearbox is dream thing for many.

There are little chances of the i20 N ever making it to India but closer to home, Hyundai will soon take the wraps off the standard-spec car in India. The i20 is on course for a a late 2020 launch in India and it will have three engine options in India – a 1.0L turbo-petrol, a 1.2 Naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.5L diesel engine. The design of the new i20 is very striking and styling and as with all Hyundai’s the interiors are absolutely to the brim and it will also boast of many tech laden features. The new-gen car will continue to rival the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Tata Altroz, Toyota Glanza, and the Honda Jazz.
