The ace director Imtiaz Ali recently took to Instagram to share memories of his first car, the Maruti 800 on its first road trip to Goa, in these times of lockdown.
The Maruti 800 has been an iconic car for a lot of Indians for being the first car of the family. The Maruti 800 was really the car that brought private cars to the hands of the masses. But did not know that the humble Maruti 800 was also the first actor of Bollywood director Imtiaz Ali? In a moment of throwback in these times of lockdown, the director took to social media to share his memories of his first car.
Arguably one of the best directors in contemporary Bollywood, Ali is known to address contemporary issues in his films in a rather eccentric manner. If you have also noticed, some of his films tend to have a road trip underlying there somewhere. Well, now we know how his love for the road has come about to be and has inevitably found its way to be represented in his films. As it turns out, this picture was taken on Ali’s Maruti 800’s first ever road trip to Goa.
Imtiaz Ali took to instagram to share this picture, just like many of us are going down the memory lane to look back at pictures from years gone by. Just the glance at this picture reminds you the simplicity of cars back them. They were brilliantly compact, simple, much fewer on the roads and surely hailed from much simpler times than we are now. Coming to think of it, modern gadgets, touchscreens, connected technologies and the likes were not the norm of the day but our cars and the emotion of hitting the road were just as enjoyable.

An user pointed out in the comments section that the hood of the car was open. Sharing an interesting trivia about the car, Ali explained that the car always had that issue. In fact, the bonnet had always remained open like that, right from the day he drove it from the dealership to years later when he finally sold it off. The grey Maruti 800 also probably made an appearance in the movie Black Friday, something another user pointed out to the director.

The Maruti 800 is an absolute icon for many of us Indians and it immediately brings back memories. It was all the middle-class in the 80s and 90s could aspire for and although a big statement of its time, the 800 did it in the most humble way. The ace director rides in a swanky BMW 6-Series GT these days but its really nice to see how fondly he remembers his old Maruti 800. Like most of us do!
