Jeep has announced that the 20 units brought in the first batch of the Wrangler Rubicon has already been sold out and deliveries for the second batch will start in May. Half of the second batch has already been booked as well.
Jeep launched the most hardcore variant of the Wrangler, the Rubicon in India sometime ago for a price of Rs Rs 68.94 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India). In just two weeks, Jeep announced yesterday that the first batch of Rubicons that were imported to India – which were just 20 units – have already been sold out. The deliveries of this first batch of Wrangler Rubicon commenced on March 15. The company has now announced that the deliveries for the second batch of Rubicons – which will again be limited to just 20 units – will begin in May 2020.
According to reports, from the second batch of Rubicons, half of them have already been booked which means just 10 more units are up from grabs. The Wrangler is proving to be more popular for Jeep than the company had expected. In fact 67% of CBU sales of Jeep are attributed to the Wrangler. Jeep India has retailed 220 units of the Wrangler (including the third-gen and fourth-gen models) since it first arrived in 2016.
The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon was launched as BS6 vehicle right from the start unlike the standard Wrangler Sahara which was brought in as BS4 vehicle back in August 2019. Both are powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that makes 268hp and 400Nm of peak torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox and Jeep’s RockTrac 4×4 all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. This is the most hardcore version of the Wrangler and it of course comes with upgraded running gear and Rubicon badges and stickers.

It even features the ‘Trail-Rated’ badge on the front fenders and no other Jeep SUV deserves this badge more than the Wrangler Rubicon. The Rubicon features a two-speed transfer case with a 4:1 ‘4LO’ low-range gear ratio, full-time torque management, electronic locking differentials at the front and rear axles and an electronically operated sway bar that enhances articulation and travel. The ground clearance stands at 217mm and the approach, departure and breakover angles stand at 43.9, 22.6, 37 degrees respectively. That’s an improvement over standard Wrangler’s by 2.1-degrees, 1.6-degrees and 0.9-degrees, respectively. The Rubicon is about Rs 5 lakhs more expensive than the standard Wrangler Sahara.

In other news, Jeep recently introduce the BS6 compliant versions of their only made-in-India product, the Compass. Jeep is also working on a number of new models for our market which includes a seven-seater mid-size SUV and also a mid-life update for the Compass. Both these models are expected to launch in India by next year. Jeep is also working on a compact SUV for India that should make its debut by 2022.
