The Volkswagen Polo GT TSI will see a new BS-6 1.0L TSI engine in place of the current 1.2L TSI engine and there will be no Polo GT TDI post March 2020.
The Volkswagen Polo GT TSI is one of the most exciting cars to drive in its segment. The 1.2L TSI engine is really a gem and it has been acclaimed by enthusiasts for its smooth power delivery, rev happy nature and refinement. Well, Volkswagen will discontinue this engine come April 2020, when the BS-6 emission norms kick in. In its place, Volkswagen will introduce a new BS-6 1.0L TSI petrol engine in the Polo GT.
The good news in that the new BS-6 1.0L TSI three-cylinder petrol engine will be more powerful than the outgoing engine. The current 1.2L TSI engine produces 105 bhp and 175 Nm of torque. The 1.0L TSI engine on the other hand produces 115 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. That’s a bump of 10 bhp and 25 Nm of torque. Also, the current BS-4 1.2L TSI engine only comes mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox. However, the new BS-6 1.0L TSI engine will of course get the 7-speed DSG gearbox but there’s a 6-speed manual gearbox on the cards as well.
This new BS-6 1.0L TSI engine will be exclusive to the Polo GT TSI variant. As for the standard Polo, it will continue with its 1.0L MPI engine but it will of course be updated to be BS-6 complaint. The 1.0-litre TSI is the same unit from Volkswagen UP GTi which was awarded the ‘Engine of the Year’ in 2018. Globally, the 1.2-litre TSI was replaced by this award-winning unit long ago.

Now coming to the Polo GT TDI, there will be no diesel engine on offer in the Polo from April 2020. Yes, Volkswagen will not be updating the 1.5L diesel engine to comply with the BS-6 emission norms. It was available in two states of tune – 90 bhp for the standard Polo and 110 bhp for the GT TDI variant. From April 2020, the Polo will be a petrol-only model with the 1.0L TSI and MPI engines. In other news, the 1.2-litre TSI, 1.5-litre TDI and 1.6-litre MPI in the Vento will also face the axe.

Expect Volkswagen to roll out the BS-6 Polo with the 1.0L TSI engine by the first-quarter of 2020, ahead of the BS6 switchover deadline in April 2020. Pricing and other details will be revealed in the near future, but we expect it to be more or less the same. Meanwhile, we still don’t know when to expect the sixth-gen Polo in India which went on sale abroad in 2017!
