The Volkswagen Vento will be a petrol-only model from April 2020 with the introduction of the BS-6 1.0L TSI engine and all current engines will be axed.
Volkswagen recently updated the Polo and Vento with a mild cosmetic makeover. Now the Volkswagen Vento is set to receive another update in the form of a new BS-6 compliant 1.0L TSI engine. This same engine will also serve duty in the BS-6 Rapid when it is launched in April 2020. However, with the coming of this new engine, all the engines in the current Vento will be discontinued.
The Volkswagen Vento is currently powered by a 1.2-litre TSI petrol, a 1.5-litre TDI diesel, and the 1.6-litre MPI petrol engine. Come April 2020, none of these engines would be upgraded to comply with the BS-6 emission norms and they will thus face the axe. With the new BS-6 1.0L, TSI engine, the Volkswagen Vento will be a petrol-only model when the new emission norms hit in April 2020.
The 1.0-litre TSI engine is offered in various international models in two states of tune: 95bhp/170Nm and 115bhp/200Nm. We expect Volkswagen to bring the higher-spec 115 bhp tune to the BS-6 Vento in India. Volkswagen India will offer this engine with a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG option.
As a matter of fact, this new 1.0L TSI engine will be the most powerful engine that the Vento has seen in its life in India. In comparison, the current 1.2L TSI engine produces 105 bhp and 174 Nm of torque. The 1.6L MPI engine also produces 105 bhp but 153 Nm of torque. As for the diesel, the 1.5L TDI engine produces 110 bhp and 250 Nm of torque. While the new 1.0L TSI engine is the most powerful of the lot, it is still not as torquey as the 1.5L, TDI engine.

Both the 1.2L, TSI and the 1.5L TDI are gem of an engine. They were acclaimed for their refinement, free revving nature and smooth power delivery. It is indeed sad that these engines will not be updated to meet the upcoming emission norms. That said, the fact that the 1.0-litre TSI will also be offered with a manual gearbox is an added bonus for VW TSI fans. The 1.2L TSI engine was offered only with the 7-speed DSG gearbox in the BS-4 Vento.
