Starting October 1, 2023, there have been 8 new updates to the driving license in India. There are already so many existing rules and regulations around driving licenses. These depend on various states, RTOs, etc. As a result, there was a lot of confusion about various aspects of the license. That is the reason why there was so much discussion around 1 nation 1 DL. This will ensure that any license made in any RTO of the country will be valid in any part of the country. Let us take a look at the details of this latest case.

8 Updates to Driving License in India
Birth Certificate
Now, the applicants need to have a birth certificate in order to make a new license. This was not the case earlier. Other documents to determine your age were valid like the school certificates. However, now, having a birth certificate has been made mandatory. You must keep it in mind before applying for a driving license now. It is also necessary for other government documents.

Grant of Learner’s License
You can now go to the RTO of your residence and apply for the learner’s driving license. Initially, you had to visit the RTO as per the address on your certificate. But now you have the option to visit your nearest RTO according to your current address. This will be extremely useful for people who are born in one place but are now residing in other parts of the country. Many people move out of their homes, particularly in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. This will enhance convenience for them.

Renewal of Driving License
Until now, the DL owners had the option to renew their driving license 30 days prior or 30 days after the expiry of the existing DL. However, as per the new rules, this time period has now been extended upto 1 year prior and 1 year after the date of expiry without any fine. However, we must mention that if the traffic cops catch you and ask for the DL after the date of expiry, you will have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000. Hence, it is a better idea to renew the DL before it expires.

Fit Car Needed for Driving Test
Another key update is that one needs to take a healthy and fit car/bike to the testing centre. This means that the condition of the car has to be perfect. This refers to working turn indicators, headlights, taillamps, reverse lights, crack-free windshields, horns, rear-view mirrors, etc. This is applicable to four-wheelers, as well as two-wheelers. Additionally, now you will get 60 secs to reverse the car in one of the assignments. That is good news.

Dispatch and Delivery
This particular update will ensure that a lot of time of the applicants is saved. Previously, there have been cases where the applicant has performed all the tests and the entire formalities have been completed but the dispatch and delivery of the final DL car would take upto 6 months. On average, people had to wait for around 2-3 months in any case. Now, the government ensures that the license will be delivered to you within a month of completing all the other formalities.

Maximum 2 Classes of Vehicles
When you apply for any driving license, you have to specify the classes. This includes LMVs, two-wheelers, commercial vehicles, HMVs, etc. However, you can now apply for a maximum of 2 vehicle classes. If you wish to apply for more, you have to wait at least 6 months and upto 1 year, for some cases. Depending on which license you wish to apply for, these waiting time periods would change.

One Nation One DL
There were some states and RTOs which were against this theory. Hence, you would have problems related to your driving license if you visited these states. But that is history now. The One Nation One DL policy is in effect now. You can get your driving license in any RTO now and travel to any part of the country. You can’t be challaned for possessing a DL from any RTO. This also enhances the convenience for the drivers.

Old Hand-Written DL Not Valid
There are still some people in some parts of the country who possess the old DL certificates. This could be hand-written without any bar code or electronic chip. These licenses are not valid anymore. You could be asked to pay a fine if you are still in possession of this. Hence, it is advised that you should get it replaced with the new one or re-apply for a new DL altogether.
