Maruti Suzuki has just crossed 8 lakh sales milestone with the Baleno premium hatchback in India. The Baleno was just introduced in 2015, and this record sales milestone was achieved in just 5 years, the fastest for any car in India. Maruti Suzuki continues to sell nearly 15,000 units of the Baleno on an average each month. In fact, in September 2020 alone, Maruti sold 19,433 units of the Baleno in India, and that’s despite any recent updates to the hatchback. So what is it that makes the Baleno so popular? Here are 5 reason why the Maruti Suzuki Baleno is the best selling premium hatchback in the country.
Frugality
The reason why Maruti Suzuki cars are so popular is because of their frugality. The Baleno goes a notch higher in this regard with its SHVS mild-hybrid tech. Powered by a 1.2L, naturally aspirated petrol engine coupled with the mild-hybrid system, the Baleno returns a real world fuel economy of 17/18kmpl (combined) for the automatic/manual variants respectively. Even the non-hybrid 1.2L K12B motor does not stray far away from the efficiency of mild-hybrid powertrain and it remains one of the most easy-to-run cars in its segment.
Safe styling
One wouldn’t say the Baleno is the most good looking hatchback of its class but the safe and conservative approach to styling has worked really well with the masses. The Baleno manages to look just about right without being too flashy. A mild facelift in early-2019 freshened up the face to make the hatchback that much more appealing. In fact, after the facelift, it perhaps looks as stylish and contemporary as its rivals.
Lots of space inside
This has to be one of the biggest selling points for the Baleno. The second most important thing for Indians after frugality in a car is interior space and the Baleno greatly delivers on this front as well. You will be able to sit five people comfortably in the car, with the rear seats being one of the most spacious in the segment. The seats themselves are also quite comfortable and coupled with an absorbent ride quality, it is one of the most comfortable cars in the segment.

Decently well packed with features
The Baleno may not quite have the upper hand in terms of equipment with tons of segment-first features, but it has everything that you will find in its rivals. The 7.0-inch touchscreen with SmartPlay infotainment system is pretty slick to use and it also comes with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay connectivity. Some more features worth mentioning would keyless entry and start, rear parking sensors with camera, audio controls on the steering wheel, digital MID, automatic climate control, automatic headlamps and follow me lamps and much more.

Nexa Experience and Low Cost of Ownership
Maruti Suzuki sells the Baleno through their Nexa chain of dealerships and that gives customers a premium buying experience. It’s something that’s quite appreciated in this segment of buyers. Even though the Baleno is a premium car and is sold through Nexa, it is a Maruti Suzuki and the cost of ownership remains unmatched. From after sales services to cost of repairs and regular maintenance, the Baleno is one of the most easy-on-your-pocket cars in this price range.
