The reports about the 5-door Suzuki Jimny entering our market are getting stronger and more concrete day by day.
In this unique image, a 5-door Suzuki Jimny is seen parked next to the 3-door version. The 5-door avatar is heavily camouflaged. This suggests that it must be a test mule. The person standing next to the SUV seems to be working with some electronics. Hence, it could be inferred that Suzuki is performing testing for any updates that it might be intending to make in order to convert the 3-door version into a 5-door. This could be good for the Indians because we prefer the latter as the 3-door variant would be too small and compact.

5-door Suzuki Jimny Seen
These images show both versions parked side-by-side. There is a clear distinction in the size which would be appreciated in our market. Even the successful Thar would be preferred by the Indian customers in a more practical 5-door format which is why Mahindra is also working on that. This version could be almost 3.9 m long with have a wheelbase of over 2500 mm. This puts it under the 4 m mark but that is not relevant since it would feature the 1.5-liter petrol hybrid engine which negates the provision for the tax subsidies for vehicles under 4 m with smaller than 1.2-liter petrol engines.

The Jimny gained a lot of traction at the Auto Expo 2020 and is already a famous product in the international markets. Moreover, the 3-door Jimny is already produced in India for exports to other countries. Hence, developing the 5-door Jimny would not be that difficult for Maruti. It has an advantage regarding the customer feedback from Mahindra Thar. It showed that people are keen on having a compact SUV for serious off-roading.

Specs
In terms of specifications, the 5-door Jimny would also make use of the 1.5-liter hybrid petrol engine from Maruti that outputs 103 hp and 137 Nm of peak power and torque. It would be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. But the main strength of the Jimny would lie in its 4×4 drivetrain and hardware. This would put it in a slightly higher price bracket than the Brezza compact SUV but at par with the rivals in Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha. In Maruti’s grand plan of launching 4 SUVs in a couple of years (recently launched Brezza included), Jimny could be a key product.
