Mahindra has been working on a more practical version of the existing Thar for a long time now and it seems like the final testing phase is underway.
In this video clip, the 5-door version of the Mahindra Thar has been spied testing on a highway. Thar made the entire lifestyle off-roading segment quite popular in its latest iteration. The waiting periods for some variants in some cities are still high. However, the limited boot space and rear passenger comfort are some of the things that bothered a few people. To remedy that, Mahindra is planning to introduce the 5-door version which will be much longer and more spacious.

The video clip has been shared by moto._tourer on Instagram. A heavily camouflaged version of the Mahindra Thar is seen driving on the highway. It is noticeably longer than the current-gen 3-door model. However, the other bits including the LED taillamps, overall silhouette and the front fascia appear to be quite similar to the regular model. This is not uncommon as the main difference lies solely in length leading to a lot of space liberated inside the cabin. Obviously, there is the addition of a rear door for easier ingress and egress for the passengers.

Specs
The 5-door Thar will use the same platform as the Scorpio N in order to incorporate more space inside the cabin. Also, it will most likely come with 2 engine options, a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, and a 2-litre turbo-petrol. In the current-gen model, the oil-burner makes 130 PS/320 Nm of peak figures while the petrol makes 150 PS/320 Nm of max figures. Transmission options for both the powertrains are a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic with a low-range box. You also get a transfer case and a mechanically locking centre differential.

The prices of the Thar range between Rs 13.53 lakh and Rs 16.03 lakh, ex-showroom. We expect the 5-door version to carry these engines unchanged but the engines might be calibrated to handle the added weight and dimensions. Finally, people will have the option of buying the Thar without compromising on practicality. The long journeys will be easier with proper rear seating and adequate boot space. Hopefully, we will get to hear about the launch date from Mahindra soon.
