Even as the demand for Maruti Jimny stays dismal, the 5-door mini-SUV is being lapped up in the UAE, where the waiting period extends to several months
Launched last year, the Maruti Jimny hasn’t really set sales charts on fire. In fact, it continues to be the least popular model in its carmaker’s arsenal. It’s noteworthy that the LWB model has been developed with an investment of a whopping Rs 960 crore. In such a scenario, the lackluster response is a huge bummer for Maruti Suzuki. But all’s not lost as this model has been received well in the export markets. A case in the point here is UAE, where the Jimny is immensely popular in both 3-door and 5-door avatars. In fact, a dealership-level source informs us about a waiting period ranging from 1-6 months, based on the stock availability. That said, the demand for the 3-door remains higher, with a waiting period reaching over 12 months in some cases.
Suzuki Jimny Much Costlier in UAE
In the UAE, the Suzuki Jimny is available from AED 75,250 – 79,750 (Rs 17,16,631 to 18,19,287). It’s available in GL and GLX trims. Meanwhile, in India, the same SUV is available for Rs.12.74 – 14.95 Lakh (ex-showroom). The available trims include Zeta and Alpha. But the huge discounts on offer make the Jimny a lot more affordable. With discounts factored in, there’s a price difference of over Rs 6 lakh on the top-spec trim. However, there are no additional features or better specs on offer on the UAE-spec model. The higher price over at the Middle East is simply due to the tax structure and import duties. iser
In India as well as for export markets, the made-in-India Maruti Jimny features a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that outputs103 hp and 130 Nm of peak power and torque. Transmission options on offer include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque converter automatic transmission. While both the transmissions are on offer on Alpha and Zeta trims in India, the UAE-spec Jimny gets GL trim exclusively with a manual and the GLZ trim only with an auto option. Power is sent to all four wheels through the ALLGRIP PRO 4×4 system. The hardware includes a low-range transfer case and locking differential. With a ground clearance of 210 mm and impressive approach, break-over, and departure angles of 36°, 24°, and 50°, respectively, this 5-door Jimny is an appealing choice for off-road enthusiasts.

Our View
The UAE market is a lot different from ours. While the local car buying lot prefers vehicles that are fuel-efficient, spacious and feature-loaded, the Middle East buyers often prefer vehicles that are capable off the road, even if they aren’t too frugal or feature-laden. That’s why globally popular cars often fail to impress Indians. The Jimny is already famous for its off-roading skills, making it one of the best mini-SUVs for its price. It’s been successful in many countries for years. In the UAE, the 3-door Jimny was already a hot-seller, but 5-door version impresses buyers looking for some additional practicality.
