The Czech car marque is bringing back diesel with its premium sedan
The 2025 Skoda Superb TDI diesel is finally making a comeback in our market. We know that in recent times, car companies have been ditching the diesel powertrains due to the strict emission regulations. It is often mighty expensive to develop the diesel engines to ensure that they meet the latest emission norms. These prices are passed on to the customers, making the cars more expensive. Hence, mass market products are rather being offered without the diesel trims. However, at the higher end of the spectrum, people are not that price-conscious. That is what Skoda is betting on.
2025 Skoda Superb TDI Diesel Spotted in India
We get a glimpse of the 2025 Skoda Superb TDI diesel courtesy of timesofindia.auto on Instagram. The visuals capture the new Superb without any camouflage. What is even more interesting is the fact that we are able to hear the typical sound of a diesel mill. That is something many people have been missing for a long time. We know that VW’s TDI engines have always been extremely popular among the masses for years. They are some of the smoothest mills and offer great performance and fuel economy. The new Skoda Superb owners can now experience this once again.
Now, while there is no official announcement regarding this, we can expect that the new Superb will bear the familiar 2.0-litre TDI turbo diesel mill, which makes around 190 hp and 400 Nm of maximum power and torque, respectively. Note that we know this from various international VW and Skoda models, which use this engine. Performing the transmission duties is a 7-speed DSG gearbox. More details will emerge closer to the launch.
My View
The diesel engines can only be successful in cars which bear a relatively hefty price tag in comparison to most mass-market cars. The financials can only make sense above a certain price point. Hence, to offer a diesel mill in a premium sedan makes a lot of sense. Also, Skoda already offers this powertrain in the international models. Therefore, it would like to experiment even in the Indian market by bringing in the diesel-powered Superb in limited numbers. Let us see how well the customers embrace it.
