Maruti Vitara Brezza was launched as a ‘diesel-only’ model more than half a decade ago. Now, however, it’s available only with a petrol engine while rivals such as Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue offer both the options. Thankfully, it looks like things will change with the next generation Brezza
The largest carmaker in the country, Maruti Suzuki, has been reportedly working on a BS6 compliant diesel engine for almost a year now in its Manesar plant in Haryana. The last-gen diesel powertrain from Maruti was discontinued at the advent of BS6 emission norms implementation in the country last year. While it may not have affected some of Maruti’s products, for instance, the entry-level and premium hatchbacks which is largely a petrol powertrain dominant segment, but products like the Vitara Brezza, Ertiga, XL6 and Ciaz would surely have benefited had Maruti had a diesel engine in its fleet. The MPV and compact SUV in particular, are in the segment where diesel engine almost becomes indispensable even though the overall trend is gradually shifting towards petrol engines. According to some reports, Ertiga and XL6 will be the ones that might feature the new diesel engine first sometime around the end of 2021. In the time to follow, even the next-gen Maruti Vitara Brezza, which could launch by mid-2022, would receive the oil-burner.
2022 Maruti Vitara Brezza Diesel Engine
The compact SUV has been due for an update for quite some time now. Especially now, when almost all the major players have entered this segment, maximizing your chances by offering the flexibility of multiple powertrains is totally understandable. We already know that it used to come with the 1.5-litre diesel engine in the BS4 version and was quite popular as well. Ertiga is most likely to get this engine in the beginning as it is the highest-selling MPV in the country by some margin. A lot of people use it as a commercial vehicle, where diesel engines are massively favoured over the petrol versions. Therefore, Ertiga and XL6 might end up getting the diesel powertrain options as early as 2021. The Vitara Brezza might be launched by mid-2022 with this engine and Ciaz might follow soon as well. Already owning more than 50% market share in the country, this will ensure that it remains that way for Maruti Suzuki in the future amidst all the competition.
