Highly updated Maruti Baleno has launched at a starting price of Rs 6.35 lakh and will be seen positioned in the same range as Tata Altroz
2022 Maruti Baleno has just been launched and from the looks of it, would help its carmaker retain the crown in the B2 hatchback segment. Helping the Baleno do so will be several segment-first features, refreshed styling and, most importantly, a better safety package that would make the highly updated model the only Maruti Suzuki car to offer 6 airbags on the top-spec trim. Quite naturally, these improvements have come at a price and the new model has been priced in the Rs 6.35-9.49 lakh bracket (ex-showroom). This will not only make the car costlier than the outgoing model (Rs 6.14-9.66 lakh) but even Rs 30,000 dearer than base model of the arch rival Tata Altroz (Rs 5.99-9.69 lakh).

2022 Maruti Baleno vs Tata Altroz Price Comparison
What this also means is that the Maruti Baleno Alpha AGS, which has a 1.2-litre petrol engine along with an AMT, is priced close to the top-spec Tata Altroz XZ+ diesel model. The Hyundai i20, though, will continue to be the costlier car in the segment as it retails in a price range of Rs 6.98-11.47 lakh. With the prices just been revealed, it’s clear that the fully-loaded petrol automatic version of the Baleno will cost significantly more than the most expensive diesel-manual variant of the Altroz.
Ex-showroom prices | 2022 Maruti Baleno | Tata Altroz |
Minimum | Rs 6.35 lakh | Rs 5.99 Lakh |
Maximum | Rs 9.49 lakh | Rs 9.69 Lakh |
In fact, the Alpha automatic variant of the 2022 Maruti Baleno will be Rs 40,000 costlier than the Tata Altroz Turbo XZ Plus that has a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a manual transmission. To justify this higher price tag, the refreshed hotseller will feature several segment-first features such as a HUD, 360-degree camera and Alexa integration. It will even have many other new features such as rear aircon vents, 9-inch Smartplay Pro+ touchscreen infotainment unit, wireless smartphone charger, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and 6 airbags.

Specifications and Variants
2022 Maruti Baleno will be powered by the same 1.2-litre Dualjet Dual-VVT naturally-aspirated petrol engine that outputs a maximum of 90PS of power and 113Nm of torque. The transmission options include a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT. It must be noted here that the outgoing version is available with a CVT, but the same has been replaced with the AMT for the updated model to keep prices under a check. This has also helped the company enhance the fuel efficiency figure from 19.56 kmpl earlier to 22.94 kmpl now. The fuel efficiency of the manual version though has gone down from 23.87 kmpl to 22.35 kmp now.
In comparison, the Tata Altroz has been available with three engine options – 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol, 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol and 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel. Based on this, we feel that those who have a low monthly running of, say, up to 2,000 km and need a lot of features along with the convenience of an automatic, should purchase the new Baleno. On the other hand, those who priortize utmost safety over features and have a low monthly use can buy the Altroz Turbo. Finally, those with a high monthly running should buy the Tata Altroz as the Baleno is a petrol-only model. On the other hand, as the Altroz is yet to be offered with an automatic option, people who need a convenient car for city use should stick to the 2022 Baleno.
