The 2020 Skoda Rapid will see an evolutionary design change but it still gives the car a modern character with sharp edges and balanced proportions.
Skoda Russia has released the first sketch of the upcoming 2020 Rapid sedan with the announcement that the car will see its global debut at the end of this year. Now the Rapid was due a generation update for long and it has also been spied testing quite a few times. The 2020 Skoda Rapid will be headed on its way to India as well and will likely be launched here by 2021, as part of the India 2.0 strategy.
The Rapid last received a facelift in 2017 and the revisions were only some cosmetic changes, that too quite minor ones. It still continues with the 1.6-litre petrol and 1.5-litre TDI even today. However, neither of these engines and BS-VI compliant and Skoda would have had to pull the plug on the Rapid come April 2020. But now, as a new model is on its way, there is a possibility that the Rapid will be refreshed on or before the deadline.
As can be seen on the sketch, the 2020 Rapid gets a much smarter face than before. The changes are not too drastic but enough to go with the times. There are new sharper, angular headlamps with a wide hexagonal grille. The bonnet features some sharp character lines and the bumpers and fog lamps have also been redesigned.

Skoda states, “The first image of the new ŠKODA RAPID shows balanced proportions, sharp edges and vibrant design elements that emphasize the modern character of the model.” However, from what we have seen on the spy-shots of pre-production test mules, the new fascia may not be to everyone’s taste. However, an aesthetic coherence is undeniable in the released sketch.

It is still quite unclear as to when Skoda will bring the 2020 Rapid to our shores. Under the India 2.0 strategy, there will be five new launches by 2021 including two SUVs and a compact sedan as well. One of the SUVs will be the Karoq and the other will be a sub-4m SUV based on the India-specific MQB-A0-IN platform. The other two models will be revisions of the Superb and Octavia. We could even see the 2020 Rapid at the 2020 Auto Expo, should it have its global preview by the year end.
