Another upcoming entrant for the sub compact SUV segment is Renault Kiger. It was expected to be showcased earlier at the Auto Expo 2020 but will be unveiled in India soon. Renault has already started testing it on Indian roads.
Renault Kiger will be built on the CMFA+ platform that also comes on the Triber. Reports suggest that the SUV is expected to undercut the prices of its competitors. Just like Triber, we have another VFM product coming soon.

Renault Kiger Compact SUV Launch

Launch Date | October 2020 |
While we were expecting Renault to show us a glimpse of its upcoming SUV at the Auto Expo 2020, it did not. Now, we recently got some spy shots of the SUV being tested in Chennai. The test mule was under heavy camouflage. Now, we are expecting Kiger to have a festive period launch, probably by October this year.
Renault Kiger Compact SUV Engine Specifications
Engine | 1.0 Litre three-cylinder petrol | 1.0 Litre three-cylinder turbo petrol |
Power | 71 BHP | 100 BHP |
Torque | 96 Nm | 150 Nm |
Kiger will continue with the brand’s 1.0 Litre three-cylinder petrol engine from Triber. The motor will produce 71 BHP and 96 Nm of peak torque. Also, it could get a turbo-charged version of the same engine. Renault is reported to be working on the 1.0 L turbo engine from the Triber. It might as well also come on the Kiger. The power figures are unknown, but we are expecting it to produce around 100 BHP and 150 Nm of peak torque.
As per Renault’s decision, all the diesel engines from its portfolio in India will be discontinued. Duster and Captur have already lost out on their engines. So, the Kiger will be an only-petrol SUV, along with the Vitara Brezza.

Height | 1600mm |
Wheelbase | 2600mm |
Built on the same platform as the Triber, Renault’s compact SUV will be the same 3.95 metres long. It will be around 1750mm wide and 1600mm tall. The wheelbase will be comparatively shorter than Triber, at around 2600mm. Since smaller engines are used here, Renault might just manage to keep its kerb weight under 1200 kgs.
Competition Check
Compact SUVs are growing day by day. They are attracting buyers from the premium hatchback and sedan segment. Also, every compact SUV is popular in its own way. Maruti Vitara Brezza and Hyundai Venue are competing for the best selling SUV title in India. Following them are the safest cars of India, Mahindra XUV300 and Tata Nexon. The Ford EcoSport might be a bit low on its sales but has its own loyal fan base. So, to generate decent sales from this space, Renault needs to pack the Kiger with many good features, stronger build quality and of course, affordable pricing.
