The 74th Independence Day in India was marked by the unveiling a very special vehicle in India – the 2020 Mahindra Thar – one that’s ‘Made in India, With Pride’, says a plaque on the interiors of the new Thar. The new Mahindra Thar is a quantum leap over its predecessor and step up in every regard possible. Its way bigger, more capable off-road, more sophisticated, has more tech and for the first time, is even suited for everyday use in the city as well. To widen the appeal of the SUV, Mahindra is offering a number of powertrain options, body styles and variants on the 2020 Thar. Let’s take a closer look at what the new Thar has to offer.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar will be available in two series of variants- AX and LX. The AX series is the off-road focused variant whereas the LX series is the lifestyle focused variant. The AX off-road oriented series will be offered with the option of either a petrol or diesel engine, paired to a manual gearbox. Automatic gearbox on the AX series will however be offered only with the petrol variants. The LX series will be offered with a diesel engine with a manual and an automatic transmission.
As for the engines themselves, the petrol engine is a 2.0-litre mStallion TGDI petrol engine that makes 150 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the diesel engine is a 2.2 litre mHawk unit that makes 130 bhp and 300 Nm of peak torque. Transmission choices include either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
Finally, coming to the variants, the 2020 Thar will be available in three variants – AX AC, AX OPT & LX. Here’s the features list you will find on each of these variants of the new Thar.
Mahindra Thar AX AC
This is the base variant of the new Thar and it comes with a fixed soft top roof only. Here’s the features that you will find on this base AX AC variant:

This is the mid-spec variant of the Thar. Petrol variants of the AX Opt will come with a manual convertible soft-top whereas the diesel variants will get the option of both the manual convertible soft-top or hard top. In terms of features, the mid-spec variant carries all features from the AX AC base variant and further gets:
