Honda has now launched the fifth generation City in India, after it was delayed for more than 3 months. The bookings already commenced months ago and now the prices have been revealed. On the other hand, two months back, Hyundai also launched the facelifted Verna which also gets a lot of upgrades.
While the Verna gets a facelift along with a BS6 engine upgrade, the Honda City gets a proper generation upgrade. Now, both of them are in a very fierce competition which will confuse a lot of buyers. The Verna is priced from Rs 9.30 Lakhs for the petrol variants and Rs 10.65 Lakhs for the diesel variant. The top-end diesel automatic variant is the costliest, priced at Rs 15.10 Lakhs. The turbo-DCT variant comes in cheaper at Rs 14 Lakhs.
Honda City, on the other hand, starts off at Rs 10.89 Lakhs up to Rs 14.65 Lakhs. The new City comes only in three variants, its base variant being equivalent to the mid-spec trim of Verna. Considerably, the starting price is actually costlier but the top-end variant of the City is cheaper. City petrol starts at Rs 10.89 Lakhs going up to 10.89 Lakhs up to Rs 14.45 Lakhs. The diesel variants start at Rs 12.40 Lakhs up to Rs 14.65 Lakhs.

The new Verna gets a 1.5 Litre petrol engine, ditching its earlier 1.6 Litre motor. The new engine produces 115 PS and 143 Nm of torque. It also comes with a 1.0 Litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine, that puts out 120 PS and 172 Nm of peak torque. That makes it the most powerful sedan in the segment.
City continues with its 1.5 Litre iVTEC engine, that now produces 122 PS and 145 Nm of peak torque. While it may sound that its the same old iVTEC engine but is actually new. For better low-end torque generation and a smoother power delivery, the engine now gets DOHC instead of SOHC, along with improvements to the VVT technology.

Verna gets a new 1.5 Litre diesel engine, which produces 115 PS and 250 Nm of peak torque. The City gets the same capacity 1.5 Litre iDTEC engine but produces 15 PS and 50 Nm lower. So, here, the latter has a disadvantage but it is then expected to give a better mileage.

Verna retains its dimensions, being 4.41 metre long, 1.72 metres wide and 1.46 metre tall. The wheelbase remains the same at 2600mm and the boot space offered will be 480 litres. In the case with the new City, it gets a generation upgrade with revised dimensions. The City is 4.55 metres long, 1.75 metres wide and 1.49 metres tall. It is slightly bigger than the outgoing version and Verna as well. This could mean that the new City will be more spacious than its rivals.
