Hyundai would have taken wraps off the next-gen i20 at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. However, with the cancellation of the Geneva Motor Show altogether, we will have to wait some more time to lay our eyes on the next-gen i20. The car is coming to India in June anyway with this generation update, the i20 will revive its rivalry with the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the Volkswagen Polo, the Tata Altroz and Honda Jazz. So here’s all that you can be expecting from the next-gen Hyundai i20 in India.
The new i20 has been completely redesigned from grounds up. It gets a very attractive new exterior design which is much sharper and contemporary than before. The interiors are also completely new and like most other Hyundai’s, it comes absolutely loaded to the brim with features and technology. It even gets a fully-digital instrument cluster which will be the first in the segment. Let’s look at it in a little more detail.

Hyundai i20 India Launch
Hyundai i20 | |
Launch Date | June 2020 |
While we were expecting the i20 to make its global debut in Geneva Motor Show this month, it did not happen. Hyundai is thus yet to fixate upon a new date for the global debut of the i20. According to reports, the hatchback should make it to Indian shores by June, 2020.
2020 Hyundai i20 Engine Specifications
Engine | 1.2L, Naturally Aspirated Petrol Engine | 1.5L Turbocharged Diesel Engine | 1.0L Turbocharged Petrol Engine |
Power (expected) | 84 BHP | 90 BHP | 100 BHP |
Torque (expected) | 113 Nm | 190 Nm | 170 Nm |
With the new i20, Hyundai will be continuing the 1.2 liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. This engine has already been made BS6 complaint in the current-gen i20 and it will go unchanged on the next-gen car But apart from that, the hatchback gets two completely new engines.
Hyundai will be introducing a new 1.5 liter diesel engine in the i20. The older 1.4 liter diesel mill has already been discontinued and it was not updated to comply with the BS6 norms. This new 1.5L diesel engine is from the Kia Seltos and it will also be powering the Venue and the Verna facelift. Hyundai will however be offering this engine in a much detuned state considering that this is only a hatchback. There will also be a brand new 1.0 liter turbo petrol engine on offer which is expected to produce around 100bhp.

Engine | 1.2 Litre petrol | 1.5 Litre Diesel | 1.0 Litre turbo petrol |
Gearbox | 5-speed MT | 6-speed MT | 6-speed MT/7-speed DCT |
The 1.2L petrol engine is expected to continue with its 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. There could be a 6-speed manual gearbox for the diesel engine. The bigger news is that the 1.0L turbo-petrol engine will even be offered with a 7-speed DCT gearbox, and that will be a first in the segment.
2020 Hyundai i20 Exterior Design
First impressions indicate that the new 2020 Hyundai i20 is more premium and even sportier looking than the outgoing version. There’s a complete makeover with every new design cue added. At the front, it flaunts the large cascading grille with new full LED headlamps and hook-shaped LED DRLs. The front and rear bumpers have been reshaped to give a sharper look. Even the electric ORVMs are completely new.
The new i20 gets refreshed 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. At the back, there is the new Z-shaped LED headlamp that looks quite upmarket. Also, there’s a subtle front splitter on the front bumper and a faux-diffuser on the rear bumper. The dual-tone finish of the tail gate and the chrome garnish that runs along the window line are particularly very attractive features.
Hyundai i20 Interior Design
First up, there’s going to be a new four-spoke steering wheels which is quite identical to the one on the India-spec Creta SUV. The steering features controls for the audio system, the cruise control and also for a new fully-digital instrument cluster. The 10.25-inch digital instrument console even changed color depending on the selected drive mode – it turns blue for Normal, green for Eco, and orange for Sport.
Further, the dashboard also gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system which seems connected with the instrument binnacle. Below the infotainment screen, there’s a panel with horizontal blades running the length of the dashboard and very cleverly also houses the AC vents, making it look like one continuous AC vent. You also notice similar blades around the door handles and along the door pockets. The layered dashboard then has a stack of buttons below the AC vents for the HVAC system and it also has multiple USB ports and a wireless charging pad located just ahead of the gear lever.

Competition Check
The Hyundai i20 is one of the original and oldest premium hatchbacks in the country. It was only much later that a lot of newer manufacturers have entered the segment and its quite competitive now. The i20 has always remained a great value for money offering and with this generation update, its even more so. In terms of pricing, the new Hyundai i20 will rival the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the Volkswagen Polo, the Tata Altroz, Ford Figo and Honda Jazz.
