The forth-gen 2020 Audi A8 comes to India in long-wheelbase L format like its predecessor and will be offered with just one petrol engine for a price of Rs. 1.56 crores (ex-showroom)
Audi has launched the new-gen 2020 A8 L flagship sedan in India for a price of Rs. 1.56 crores (ex-showroom, India). This is Audi India’s second new launch in 2020 following the flagship Q8 SUV that was launched in India for Rs. 1.33 crores earlier this month.
The new Audi A8 L will be a petrol only model at launch, like the rest of the German carmaker’s recent models. Audi has already announced their plans of discontinuing their diesel engines in India. The Audi A8 L is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine and comes with 48V mild-hybrid technology that includes a belt-starter generator and a 10Ah lithium-ion battery pack. This essentially allows the A8 to coast at speeds between 55-160kph with the engine off for up to 40sec.
The engine in the A8 L will come mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The new-gen A8 even comes with all-wheel steering which really makes this barge of a car easier to drive in tight urban conditions. It really is a barge of a car measuring 5.3m in length, 1.95m in width and 1.49m in height. Like its predecessor, the new-gen A8 is also understated in its design but it will not be mistaken for anything other than an Audi. The face is dominated by a rather huge grille and the essence of the A8 lies its details like HD Matrix LED headlamps and OLED tail lamps connected by a light-bar.
On the inside, the cabin is well laid out with digital screens and piano black trim on the dashboard. A faux AC vent runs along the entire width of the dashboard and it gets a 10.1-inch MMI touch response display and another 8.6-inch digital display below for the air-con system and other in-car controls. Audi’s virtual cockpit system is also present via a high-resolution 12.3-inch display. The setup is quite similar to what we saw on the Q8 but the A8 gets its unique design elements like an all-new steering wheel and unique interior panels.

The A8 is however about its back seat experience and on that front, its similar to no other Audi. Like before, we will get the A8 in a long-wheelbase format as standard and the design focus will be on the rear-seat passengers. There’s a new rear-seat remote control system – which is stored in the rear-centre armrest – enables a variety of functions (like controlling the interior Matrix LED reading lights) and leather upholstery all around the cabin is standard. It comes equipped with an unparalleled rear-seat entertainment package that comprises two touchscreen units mounted at the back of the front seats, massage seats and even an optional foot massager for the left rear seat.

The forth-generation Audi A8 L is certainly late to the party as it rekindles its rivalry with the Mercedes Benz S-Class, the BMW 7-series and the Jaguar XJ in the luxury sedan space in India. Being a complete import, the A8 L comes with a high degree of customisation, including 54 exterior colour options and a wide array of interior trims and upholstery choices. Bookings for the sedan have already been underway at Audi dealerships since the second half of 2019.
